About Java | Daniel in Indo
https://danielinindo.wordpress.com/java
Sometimes teaching as a PCV. Java is the same size as Florida with more than 7x the population (136 million). More than 700 languages are spoken across the archipelago. Indo is home to both the world’s third largest democracy and a Muslim majority (88%). Indos don’t have last names. Indos love football but are ranked only #139 by Fifa. The average Indo eats 220 pounds of rice a year. Indos live in the (simple) present. Other tenses don’t exist. Indonesian doesn’t distinguish volcanoes from mountains.

I traveled to Burma over the holidays with Elle. Softened its harsh rule in recent years. And in 2010, the National League for Democracy headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Sometimes teaching as a PCV. Archives for the month of: November, 2012. Idul Adha: Strengthening Communities through (Animal) Sacrifice. November 2, 2012. Once a year, Muslims worldwide commemorate this example of Ibrahim’s faith and Allah’s exceptional mercy by offering Allah a contemporary sacrifice of assorted animals on Idul Adha. Sometimes teaching as a PCV. Archives for the month of: February, 2013. Burma Photos, Part II: Getting Villagey. February 10, 2013. Our introduction to Inle Lake could have been more positive. As our group’s bus wound down the hillsides of Nyaungshwe Township, we spotted a blackened mass of charred metal lying in an upturned field. A plane? We wondered. Then a turnoff to Heho Airport confirmed our suspicions. If you believe the government’s story, the plane. Inle stretches lengthwise down a long valley s...

In the land of dragons. Indonesia Travel Packing List. A Transformation Into a Balinese Lady. May 20, 2014. As things wind down, more and more people have taken to asking me if I have any regrets which I think is a mistranslation for an experience I never got to have while in Indonesia. It’s hard to think of anything (though I’m sure there are plenty), but while having this conversation with my friend, Bu … Continue reading →. Pemuteran in 10 Photos. March 17, 2014. Glossary o’ Terms. The Macts of the Fatter. Words on a page. Love Travels by Foot. Teaching English and wondering What the hell am I doing? Elements battle for my heart. Meeting the border of morality and propriety. The hissing chorus of a snakeless land. My eyes see the roiling fear. Of the cowled unknown. Hiding its true guise of normalcy. Skulking under ambitions of life. Laying prostrate as cowards and heroes alike. Only the battle cries are heard. The screaming and salivating dogs of purity. Staring...

Monday, February 21, 2011. Family Trees, Sad Stories, and Valentines. My students finished up their unit on describing families with two projects: a family tree poster and an essay about either their happiest or saddest family memory. The trees came out so so so well! The essay assignment I stole from Colleen (thanks Oma! One girl wrote about how her saddest memory was her last birthday, when her parents spent the day arguing with each other and forgot all about her. One boy wrote about how he and his mo...

Wednesday, February 8, 2012. BUT, thankfully, it only lasts a week, and it only occurs somewhere between one and five times per semester. AND it is a chance to read a book or knit while the students test. Thing I’ve done in the past two years. A few weeks ago I visited Mount Bromo. Everything else is normal and generally very good and unremarkable. A few new sets of photos up, all courtesy of Pak Lukman, our Japanese teacher: OSIS Elections. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Thank you Aunt Cathy and Uncle Lou, again, for letting us use those sweet digs. Being back on American soil was not as strange or jarring as I anticipated—on the contrary, the whole week was very chill and relaxed, and I was happy to come back to. Cip is justifiably super duper excited about a workshop he attended. The beauty of Batik Bojonegoroan.

Tuesday, December 21, 2010. Merry Semester and Happy almost-Christmas! Last week was UAS [Ujian Akhir Semester, semester final exams] week. I spent the week proctoring exams, grading exams and reporting grades in different reports and forms and record books. For semester exams, students are divided 40 to a classroom with 20 from one grade and 20 from another, seated in alternating rows so two students from the same grade do not share a desk. Two teachers are assigned to each room to proctor. All Grade 10...

Sunday, September 26, 2010. Peace Day, Halal bi Halal and Back to Team Teaching. Following the ceremony the students lined up according to class and the line of 911 students descended upon the teachers to shake hands or salim each teacher and ask for forgiveness. It was pretty neat, and I was happy see all of the students and be able to whisper to one of the teachers next to me “Now what was his name again? Do you need a nap? Do you need ice for your hand? Thursday was my first real day teaching again...

Friday, January 13, 2012. We had a good run, but I'm seeing somebody else now. Don't be mad. Her name is Wordpress, and you two really have a lot in common. To be honest, though, my new place there. Is a lot nicer. I know. I know. Lava lamps and Mexican jumping beans are still great. John Travolta, too. But your ranch house with maroon carpeting and wood paneling? I can't do it anymore. I need a refined lady with modern sensibilities to give me the confidence to succeed in the new year. But do you really?

Stew in Beppu, or Another Photo Post. As something to hold everyone (myself) over until the final in Japaniel, Japaniel post, I am posting my Uncle’s Photos of Japan. As for his impressions of Japan, I would seek the man out yourself- receiving his e-mails, updating me on the Ravens, explaining his latest cooking adventures, reminds me that his observations were fresh, mixed with the experiences of his life and affecting his impressions. I’ll post the link in my last entry. January 13, 2009 at 9:25 am.

A Life of Service:. My experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya. Friday, February 10, 2012. The Floodgate of Affection. Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives. A few years ago I read a book called The Secret. Apply this animals in Kenya and you get animals at your doorstep all the time. Why is that? Let's take a closer look at the way in which animals are treated in general. In general, the pet in the house tends to be treated with af...
