American History Now: Air Time

http://amhistnow.blogspot.com/2009/09/air-time.html

Classroom conversation and cultural commentary / Jim Cullen. Wednesday, September 9, 2009. In which we see Ms. Bradstreet drive a hard bargain. The Maria Chronicles, #9. Maria expected she’d be challenged in one way or another fairly early on. Realistically, day two is about right. Still feels early, though. The first challenge is from two girls off toward right side of the room. One’s name is Janey. She doesn’t quite remember the other girl’s name. Katrina? Now where was she? Wilhelmina, whose nickname ...

The Secret Life of Teaching, #8. 8221; Ed Vinateri says sarcastically. “The system. Menu “Naturally.”. 8220;Of course,” Tony says in a tone of good-natured ribbing, “your default setting is permanently set to off, Ed.”. Absolutely,” he replies, happy to be the butt of a joke. Classroom conversation and cultural commentary / Jim Cullen. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. You are reading what is now an archive of approximately 500 discrete posts. American History Now. Began as a blog at the dawn of the Obama era on February 4, 2009 with a piece about "Outlaw Pete,". A song on Bruce Springsteen's new album Working on a Dream. Which in retrospect looks like one of the Boss's weaker efforts, though the song holds up well). In the years since, a new post for American History Now. To partici...

This traffic jam/How I hate to be late/Hurts my motor to go so slow . . . .". Maria is stuck on the parkway. She thinks of the James Taylor song she loves be. American History Now: Compensations

Classroom conversation and cultural commentary / Jim Cullen. Tuesday, March 25, 2014. In which we see a teacher discuss the only thing more private than his sex life. The Secret Life of Teaching, #9. She and I have been doing extra work—summer classes, SAT II prep, etc. to make up the difference (and pay for a looming set of braces on our youngest). I find all this exhausting, even depressing, to contemplate. I shouldn’t. Financially speaking, that’s just plain dumb. Man” I’m not in the marke...Hastings ...

American History Now: Stamp of disapproval

http://amhistnow.blogspot.com/2009/10/stamp-of-disapproval.html

Classroom conversation and cultural commentary / Jim Cullen. Wednesday, October 14, 2009. In which we see Ms. Bradstreet confront post-weekend torpor in the pre-Revolutionary era. The Maria Chronicles, #15. As Maria heads to her classroom on Monday morning, she passes by fragments of blue and orange streamers dangling off lockers. She sees a sign outside the nurse's office: BEAT POLY! Some listless rustling of pages. Willie was already cued up, of course, as was Vanessa and, a little surprisingly, Ka...

Just Me: Tales from A Teacher: November 2011

http://md400edtech.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 8, 2011. Spelling and Handwriting: Lessons from Best Practices. I was shocked to learn that there is apparently a controversy about whether to teach cursive first when we start teaching handwriting. I'm not sure I can back this opinion up with reasons, and it might stem entirely from longstanding tradition deep in my veins and early school memories; but I think that's an AWFUL idea! Is showing them how to make one letter a day enough? Ah, it's all so overwhelming sometimes. I know that ...

Just Me: Tales from A Teacher: Quick Thoughts on What Makes an Effective Sentence

http://md400edtech.blogspot.com/2011/11/quick-thoughts-on-what-makes-effective.html

Tuesday, November 8, 2011. Quick Thoughts on What Makes an Effective Sentence. I'm thinking about two things while I'm reading the chapter on building sentences as a writer. The first is the six-word memoir. Idea that I keep. I know that some of these six word memoirs "technically" count as more than one sentence, but it's interesting to think about how much of a challenge it can be to pack content into only a few words, which is the goal of writing an effective sentence. That sentence is a gem, isn't it?

Just Me: Tales from A Teacher: Pretending I'm Not Scared

http://md400edtech.blogspot.com/2011/11/pretending-im-not-scared.html

Saturday, November 5, 2011. Pretending I'm Not Scared. This disgusting creature is what I realized was crawling on the wall behind me in the middle of a math demonstration. I was alerted to this fact by the sudden outburst of 29 children screeching and jumping out of their chairs. Did I mention my illogical fear of creepy crawlies? I'd be quickly joining the ranks of the screaming and jumping kids. What is there to be scared of? Labels: Chaos and Pandemonium. Pretending Im Not Scared. I can totally relat...

You Shall Know My Velocity

Friday, December 9, 2011. 2011 California International Marathon (CIM) Recap. I may struggle to communicate exactly what felt strange, but the point is, very early on this race felt different than any I've run before, even when I ran the CIM two years prior. So much so, I didn't need to pee three of four times in a 40 minute period before the race as I often do. But, after looking into her eyes, some self-examination, and hearing some of the more recent interviews. Why am I rambling on about this? Runnin...

Skip to main content. 1,000,000,000 Seconds. Thirty people in tents rarely move quickly or in unison and it takes a while to get the herd moving this morning. After much deliberation, tracking down the necessary gear, a double set of cams .5 through 3, we stand around for a while, wait for a bit, then hold off on action for a little longer. We will still be the first vehicle out of the lot this morning. Morning in the Desert. Two birds with one frigid. Traveling Down from the Hills. Mongo for Flask apps.
