He distinction I use between hiking and backpacking is that hiking is something that can be done in one day while backpacking is a multi-day adventure. Hiking is something you can do on a Saturday morning before you go to an afternoon wedding or something you can do after after work to unwind. For me a decent hike ranges between 5-10km but I’ve done 20-25km single day hikes that have left me pretty wiped but with a feeling of accomplishment. So what do you need to do this? Small daypack (10-30 liters).
