Hummingbird friends at monteverde. January 25, 2014. In the cloud forest. January 24, 2014. Pura Vida, Santa Rosa. January 21, 2014. Playa Naranjo was not only a beautiful beach, but also has some crazy biodiversity. Before we hiked in we were warned that the day before a jaguar had hopped onto the hood of the park ranger’s car on that very trail! It was such an incredibly organic and awesome experience to watch the little hatchlings fight their way down the beach into the ocean. January 17, 2014. Costa ...

Poles Apart: From the Arctic to the Tropics. January 23, 2015. We’re not in Greenland anymore. The minute we got off the bus at our first station the Palo Verde National Park I immediately felt a wall of intense heat smack me in the face. This was an experience unnatural enough to be having in January, but do be doing research in anything but chill weather seemed alien to me. And here I am in Costa Rica, measuring soil moisture in the same way I analyzed our Greenlandic samples back in Hanover! As a budd...

Hakuna Telmata | Dartmouth Bio FSP

https://dartmouthbiofsp.wordpress.com/2015/01/26/hakuna-telmata

January 26, 2015. Miranda, Ann, Fredrik and I spent the past week in breathtaking Monteverde looking at a mini-ecosystem we never would’ve imagined would be so interesting: phytotelmata! What are phytotelmata, do you ask? Well, they’re tiny pools of water located in plants, like bromeliads, for example. We also found some pretty cool stuff when we looked at what these “islands” of water contained: even some organisms that haven’t been seen in almost a hundred years. Photo credit: Miranda Stein ’16. Thoughts about science and life in the field. Att ansöka om studentvisum till USA. 8220;What do you think you’re doing? January 22, 2015. January 22, 2015. So why, exactly, am I running around in the woods in Central America these days? At my college more or less every department has their own foreign studies program (“FSP”). Most of the programs involve taking classes at another university, but a few of them, the Biology FSP. Our days are mostly filled with “mini. Oh, and we also keep a blog. And life i...

Thoughts about science and life in the field. Att ansöka om studentvisum till USA. Circle of Life, pt. 1. January 19, 2015. January 23, 2015. This is the first part in a series of posts read parts two and three here. It gets dark quickly at the equator. Sunset lasts only 15 minutes, but the red glow of the beach continued through the night as our group ventured across the sand with reading lights lit on our headlamps. Photo by Leehi Yona. Are we learning anything here? | Adventure Ramblings

https://ramblingsandadventure.wordpress.com/2015/02/01/are-we-learning-anything-here/comment-page-1

Thoughts about science and life in the field. Att ansöka om studentvisum till USA. Are we learning anything here? February 1, 2015. January 26, 2015. So are we learning anything this term, apart from how awesome Costa Rica is? The answer is yes, believe it or not. Biology and natural history is obviously a big part of what we’re doing, but lots of aha-moments also happen when we do stats. These tiny little pools, as small as a few ml, host whole ecosystems. Who knew. Scopin’ (photo by Ann Dunham). Addres...

February 9, 2015. Most people are familiar with how the Black Widow spider eats the male after they’ve mated for nutrition (or maybe just because she can). That’s how they get their name. Black Widows aren’t the only arthropods who do crazy stuff, however. Here’s a list of a few more cool insects:. Looks like a kung fu fighter. Catches hummingbirds. Female eats the head of the male as they mate. He keeps going anyway. Bite off its head and the body lives until it dies from starvation two weeks later.
