Dave's Yak Tales: June 2015
http://davesyaktales.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 28, 2015. Sunday, did a car bike shuttle to launch from the little park at the end of Dixie Beach Blvd on Sanibel. No parking without as resident pass. So, I drop the kayak bike to Jerry's grocery leave the car, and bike back. On the water, Pine Island Sound, at 10:25. One camera was still on supervivid setting from the prior night's sunset. If you are going to build a house on a point, put a hole in the wall so hurricanes blow through. Bike to the car. Ready to roll. 4 wheel style.
Dave's Yak Tales: Rock Springs Run
http://davesyaktales.blogspot.com/2015/07/rock-springs-run.html
Saturday, July 25, 2015. Early start, on the water at 6:43 AM at Wekiwa Springs State Park. Down the Wekiva River. Up Rock Springs Run. Turn around at 9:02. Saw the deer in the opening photo here look quickly. Turtles. Hard shell. Landed at 11. Well before the afternoon heat and thunderstorms. As I write on September 17, I am guessing I had a sandwich halfway up he hill from the water to the parking lot. One reason to get up early. Crowds at the springs. I headed to the quiet side of the Park.
Dave's Yak Tales: October 2014
http://davesyaktales.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Launched from the Chassahowitzka Campground at 9:40. $5 parking. On past fall trips, I have seen manatees in the shade on the opposite side of the ramp and dock. Helps to know where to look. I saw something furry in a tree and thought, have monkeys invaded Chassahowitzka? Meanwhile, across the River. Everything so far was before I reached the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The sign that opens this Tale. It was 10:50. Especially when food is caught on crab trap floats.
Dave's Yak Tales: February 2015
http://davesyaktales.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Ignore the Tuesday date. This is Monday, February 23, 2015. Morning stroll begins. I had wondered about how, and if, the island cat population is kept under control. This looks like a carriage house to me. Horseless. When I was a kid, my grandmother still had one. No horses. Puffery on a foggy morning. Keeping it all together. I confess. Had shoes and socks. But, I was walking so I think it was ok. Have never gone into the Black Dog Bar and Tables. Cigar bar. Littoral: blog of...
Dave's Yak Tales: Greetings From Cedar Key
http://davesyaktales.blogspot.com/2010/09/greetings-from-cedar-key.html
Saturday, September 4, 2010. Greetings From Cedar Key. There is not a lot of information on internet about the Waccasassa River. Information useful to me, that is. Most links are to the Wacasassa State Preserve, along the Gulf. I finally found this. Http:/ www.floridadayadventures.blogspot.com/2010/02/waccasassa-winter.html. A good report, with a link to another. And hey! It has Dave's Yak Tales as a favorite. I'm touched. Time for a kayaking break. The Gulf is calling. I'll be back. I came to the conflu...

South Florida Guy: South Florida Pirates - World Ocean day at the Museum of Discovery and Science
http://sflaguy.blogspot.com/2013/06/south-florida-pirates-world-ocean-day.html
Living Life Like a Tourist in My Own Part of the World. Tuesday, June 11, 2013. South Florida Pirates - World Ocean day at the Museum of Discovery and Science. I have been concentrating a lot on pirates recently. There are two reasons for that. One, they keep turning up at events I want to photograph and two. well that one is a bit more personal. These photos are from World Ocean Day. At the Museum of Discover and Science. How can you not in their elaborate garb. With the crew this very weekend. HOIST TH...

Gator Attacks Kayaker in Central Florida Lake. Gator Attacks Kayaker in Central Florida Lake. Now there’s something that every kayaker LOVES to read. I was almost gator dinner. -Buffy. It’s alligator mating season, which means they’re a little bit more aggressive and territorial. I’m certainly no expert, but I believe that in this instance, the gator was baited by the small dog who was sitting in the boat. (The small dog, Buffy, now has a facebook page. Tampa Bay – Fort DeSoto. Tampa Bay – Fort DeSoto. Kayak Cutie and I decided to take a little mini-vacation this weekend. We found a good rate at the Crowne Plaza – Westshore. Near Tampa Int’l Airport. Arriving mid-afternoon on Saturday, we hit the Salvador Dali Museum. In St Petersburg, had a stellar dinner at Doormet. Truffle Mac ‘n’ Cheese! And retired early. Slept in on Sunday with a leisurely late check-out, and headed back down to St. Pete to our planned launch at Fort De Soto Park. We made it back ...

8220;The Perils of Staying Inside”. 8220;The Perils of Staying Inside”. A friend of mine shared a profound article. With me from the Wall Street Journal, titled “Mom Was Right: Go Outside”. It touches on evidence that being outdoors, especially in nature, improves mood, creativity, and general well-being. The article definitely hit home for me. I’ve been an avid “. Salt Run – Anastasia State Park. Salt Run – Anastasia State Park. Castillo de San Marcos. What a trip this was! We decided to do a mini-vacation and stay overnight in St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S. Saturday we walked around the city, visited Castillo de San Marcos, a fort built in the 17th century. And took a cheesy tour of the Old St. Johns County Jail. There are just a lot of things to do in this quaint old city – we easily could have spent a few more days here. Low tide at launch. We beach...

Orlando Wetlands Park | 'Yak Chronicle
http://www.yakchronicle.com/2012/07/09/orlando-wetlands-park
I’ve been meaning to check out Orlando Wetlands Park. For a while now. It’s actually a man-made, intentional swamp/marsh that is tightly managed and controlled, and functions as a last-step filtration for waste water. I did a bit of research on the facility, and I find it truly elegant and fascinating what they’ve done. And we set out for the park. It’s about a 20 minute drive from East Orlando, in the heart of Christmas, Florida. (yes, really.). We hiked just shy of a mile. Here’s the map. Gator Attacks...

Wekiva River – Katie’s Landing. Wekiva River – Katie’s Landing. My kayaking partner, we’ll call her KC (short for “Kayak Cutie”), bought a Wilderness Systems Pamlico 100. Today No more renting for this duo! We picked up her boat right when the place opened, which was about an hour and a half after we THOUGHT the place opened. Perkins breakfast for the win! The weather forecast was pretty awful. Small craft advisory, 100% chance of thunderstorms. We pressed on and figured we’d play it by ear. Email (will ...

Family on the Wekiva. Family on the Wekiva. I had some company today while paddling the Wekiva. Family trips are definitely different than 1 or 2-person trips, but they’re fun in their own way. Seeing my preschool daughter zen-out on the water is pretty amazing. We launched from Wekiwa Springs. Again, rented a 3-person sit-on-top ‘yak for the family, and dropped both boats in at the launch. We stayed in the main channel all the way to Wekiva Island. Here’s the map. Posted in: Kayak Trips. KayakGuide Plac...

Indian River – Canaveral Nat’l Seashore. The trips just keep getting better. This one, I think, is my favorite so far. The Indian River, launching from Canaveral National Seashore. On a tip I got from a random doctor office employee, I decided it was time to check out the Indian River. Tales of manatee and dolphin sightings had me sold in a big way. The initial plan was to launch at JB’s Fish Camp. But some friendly advice from Dave over at Dave’s Yak Tales. The features of the Indian River are spectacul...
