Which metrics matter? When hitting the targets misses the point | Sensemaking

Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. When hitting the targets misses the point. December 13, 2013. Today the UK’s school league tables are out. From the moment the national media hit “print”, the panic set in, with parents across the country frantically combing through the data to discern if their school came out as good or bad. When confronted with this palpable sense of panic, I realised that I didn’t care. I thought, why does it matter where we sit? Posted by Rowan Conway.

I don’t “believe” in climate change | Sensemaking
https://sensemakingblog.wordpress.com/2014/03/01/i-dont-believe-in-climate-change
Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. I don’t “believe” in climate change. March 1, 2014. Let me clarify, I don’t “believe” in anthropogenic climate change, because it is not a religion. I simply accept that there is considerable scientific evidence that man-made climate change is happening, and that reducing greenhouse gas emissions would help to mitigate against its effects. Today’s proposals are a step in the right direction towards an ambitious emissions reduction target for...

Are smart cities just for smart arses? | Sensemaking
https://sensemakingblog.wordpress.com/2013/11/25/are-smart-cities-just-for-smart-arses
Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. Are smart cities just for smart arses? November 25, 2013. And today I stumbled across a brilliant article in the New York Times which clearly articulated my pain. It analysed the effect of the so-called technorati on the city of San Francisco, charting the impact of the Google and Facebook millionaires who are being blamed for driving up housing prices and threatening the city’s bohemian identity. I quote…. Even the Mission District. Migaa, ...

Be bossy and proud! | Sensemaking
https://sensemakingblog.wordpress.com/2014/04/06/be-bossy-and-proud
Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. Be bossy and proud! April 6, 2014. I read an article yesterday. About the formidable Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg and her Ban Bossy. To label bossy as wholly negative, is to make it shameful – and it shouldn’t be. Dictionary definitions of bossy include “ given. About” or “inclined to domineer”, and while few would want to domineer all the time, b. Ossiness is a competency that good leaders should have and be able draw upon on occasion ...

Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. How resilient is your city? November 12, 2013. So how will we cope? Resilience is apparently the key. It is the new buzzword, replacing “mitigation” and “adaptation” in the (serious) climate change debate. In September this year, President Bill Clinton made an urgent call for governments and city leaders to plan for climate resilience, he said:. Posted by Rowan Conway. Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. Project Sunlight puts spotlight on parents. November 21, 2013. Happy new era! This time it’s personal | Sensemaking
https://sensemakingblog.wordpress.com/2013/12/30/why-business-is-personal
Strategy, communication, sustainability, community and society. This time it’s personal. December 30, 2013. So, while I was pondering this big troubling thought, synchronicity led me to this fab speech by Dov Seidman, given at the RSA last week. Seidman is CEO of LRN, a global ethics consultancy, and here he outlines the implications for living and working in a world where the old rules no longer apply. This is a profound shift into what he calls the “era of behaviour” and it has dramatic imp...He quotes...
