Confessions of an expatriate magnolia in the desert. Monday, March 27, 2006. Seven thousand words into a new novel. Came up with a working title I can live with. I'll do anything to avoid working on taxes. Suddenly, no writer's block now that I need to do taxes. Moving is a killer- -two states worth of forms. I want to jump into an advertisement I saw today- a white deserted beach. There's nothing like a deadline. Back to my Receipt Safari. Posted by S. R. Hatcher at 7:06 PM. Wednesday, March 22, 2006.

Writing, getting published and whatever else I feel like discussing. Monday, April 24, 2006. Branding Excercises, or "Truth in Eating". So, I'm still high over Jim Atwell's column. In the Cooperstown Crier. I do PR in my day job, which means I read at least ten newspapers every day. Yet making time for my hometown weekly is a luxury in which I gladly partake. For example: Give me pate de fois gras. Another one I haven't tried yet, but wouldn't mind tasting: Sweetbreads. Tiny, bony, salty fish that someti...

Confessions of an expatriate magnolia in the desert. Monday, February 20, 2006. I know that glint, , that's the way I feel about reading. I rather read a book but in a pinch I'll settle for a brochure, a trade magazine, or an appliance manual. One insomniatic night many years ago, I found myself at a hotel on business, luggage lost, and no book to read. Panic! I pored over the tabbed hotel notebook for a while until it occurred to me there might be a newspaper in the lobby. I love to read. A lot of quest...

Writing, getting published and whatever else I feel like discussing. Saturday, December 31, 2005. I don't make resolutions. Well, that's not entirely true. Mostly, I've stopped making them. In 2003, I resolved to join a gym and to sign with a top literary agent. I joined the gym on January 3 (about 5 days after I made the resolution), and missed my self-imposed signing deadline by less than a month. Close enough for me. I'm still going to the gym, by the way. I don't need any more resolutions. 7 I made a...

Confessions of an expatriate magnolia in the desert. Saturday, April 08, 2006. Writing is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.". Posted by S. R. Hatcher at 1:41 PM. Monday, April 03, 2006. Confessions of an expatriate magnolia in the desert. Sunday, January 29, 2006. Reeading two novels right now in my not so spare time: Our Man in Havanna by Graham Greene and Captain Alatriste by Arturo Perez-Reverte. Both are good stories, well written. But writing a novel sometimes ruins the reading of a good story. I start analyzing what I like and why, underline passages that are well written, and go back to them to determine what it is I like so much about that particular arrangement of words. I'm a ...

Writing, getting published and whatever else I feel like discussing. Tuesday, March 28, 2006. Had a great post the other day, asking what we listen to when we blog. It appealed to me because I often listen while I write, by necessity, not by choice. Whether I'm listening for research or pleasure, however, the culprits remain the same: Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. Sometimes, as I've previously posted, I need to reveal my inner badass. Instead of listening to hard rock, that's w...Since...
