Deaf and Tactless: Photography, Nokia-style

http://deafandtactless.blogspot.com/2009/07/photography-nokia-style.html

Film, photography, shiny objects. Monday, July 13, 2009. Last night in the middle of Brighton's Corn Exchange- part of this year's Loop Festival (www.loopbrighton.com)- I went to one of the best shows I've seen in ages. If you don't know Fever Ray, they're half of The Knife and at least 95% as awesome. I mean word on the street is that they are getting a lot of airplay on US radio, but I'm frankly not into such philistinism so I can't confirm. I would be unstoppable. Also: there are some great video clip...

Deaf and Tactless: All a Bit Flash

http://deafandtactless.blogspot.com/2009/07/all-bit-flash.html

Film, photography, shiny objects. Monday, July 13, 2009. All a Bit Flash. Here's a shout-out of sorts to the lovely folks chez Nikon: the one piece of kit I've ever bought new, an SB-600 flash unit, crapped out less than two months out of the package. Here's hoping your warranty is good. Nevertheless, some interesting effects came out of playing around with it. Here are the results:. And then sometimes it was dead-on. I'll never figure this crap out. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). New York, New Fork.

Deaf and Tactless: June 2009

http://deafandtactless.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Film, photography, shiny objects. Monday, June 29, 2009. A phenomenon not exactly endemic to London happens at least once a year on several lucky East London streets: the block party. I live on one of these streets. Save a breakup, it's the world's best excuse for a Sunday night piss-up. at least to a Yank like me, unused to doing such things as part of the culture. If this is all too vanilla for some of you, there was some underage keg-love going on,. As well as a capella. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Deaf and Tactless: July 2009

http://deafandtactless.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Film, photography, shiny objects. Wednesday, July 22, 2009. Like the Coldplay song. Except less shitty. Not dead yet, just wildly busy. More photos to file than I know what to do with, so check back for updates. Monday, July 13, 2009. Last night in the middle of Brighton's Corn Exchange- part of this year's Loop Festival (www.loopbrighton.com)- I went to one of the best shows I've seen in ages. So what I'm thinking is I need more loyal readers so that everyone can chip in a dollar or a quid or what have ...

Deaf and Tactless: May 2009

http://deafandtactless.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Film, photography, shiny objects. Sunday, May 31, 2009. Jimmy Stewart: The Bastard I Hate to Love. Furthermore, in the classic struggle between Stewart’s ego and id, he almost invariably finds a “superego” mentor figure: Frenchy in Destry Rides Again. Ronda Castle in The Far Country. And of course Midge in Vertigo. John Wayne's Tom Doniphan in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. And certainly more chivalrous. And Scottie in Vertigo. This blog is designed as a forum for me to sound off rampantly on various ...

New York, New Fork: November 2009

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

New York, New Fork. Thursday, November 5, 2009. I am writing my Food Sociology term paper on the notion of hierarchy within movements, obviously with direct focus on the current food movement. My questions being the following (or some mashup thereof): Is hierarchy (or at least the notion of) necessary to the idea of a movement? Do non-hierarchical movements face a detriment when they go up against highly hierarchical and structural institutions? Go to mark 4:30. Wednesday, November 4, 2009.

New York, New Fork: Stumptown Arrives in NYC

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009/09/stumptown-arrives-in-nyc.html

New York, New Fork. Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Stumptown Arrives in NYC. So happy. So happy. So happy that I might even go out for a coffee after work rather than a beer! Shocking, I know. Brief synopsis before I direct you to the brief article in the NYT: Stumptown, started in Portland, is a direct trade. Coffee importer, roaster and distributor. Their dedication to the bean. In the end, this is not an elitist pursuit- it is quite the opposite. Their espresso a their coffee shop in the new (and ...

New York, New Fork: A Taste of School

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009/10/taste-of-school.html

New York, New Fork. Wednesday, October 7, 2009. A Taste of School. I am taking a great class called Food Sociology. We are breaking down the food movement and its opposition. We just started a discussion board online for thoughts we have that we don't have time for in class and my professor (who is quite famous and an idol of mine but for now I will leave nameless) posted this article. Is just banal rhetoric meant to propel profits at the expense of people's happiness and health. And, in this sense, I wo...

New York, New Fork: December 2009

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

New York, New Fork. Thursday, December 3, 2009. Some really great links I found today, all via Twitter:. New York Times Slideshow of the Foodie Scene in Marfa, Texas. Article on the USDA and the (not so great) job it's doing protecting our foods from contamination at Marion Nestle's blog, Food Politics. Article on Salon.com about how to ethically eat seafood these days called Drop That Salmon! FDA chart on mercury levels in commercial fish. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. Letter to a Friend. New York, New Fork: Sad Truth

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009/07/sad-truth.html

New York, New Fork. Tuesday, July 28, 2009. USA Today reports that last year we Americans spent $147 billion - billion! On conditions related to obesity. Obese persons have medical bills 42 percent higher than those of normal weight. The surge in obesity may be related to modern industrial agriculture, including the use of chemicals such as endocrine disruptors. So the ag system produces cheap food, yes, but may impose other costs - time for a rethink. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

New York, New Fork: Anella

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009/07/anella.html

New York, New Fork. Friday, July 24, 2009. My birthday dinner last night was absolutely impeccable. The best thing in the world is when a restaurant opens in your neighborhood, doesn't have their liquor license yet (and is therefore BYOB) and serves amazing Italian fare, including brick oven pizzas. Um, oh yes. I was a happy gal. Main courses, we chose pizzas! Though they do have fish meat pasta selections that I am sure are lovely. I had a meatball pizza with the softest, must succulent slices of meatba...

New York, New Fork: February 2010

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

New York, New Fork. Tuesday, February 23, 2010. For my Ethical Controversies class this week, we read Peter Singer and Jim Mason's book The Ethics of What We Eat. Formerly known as The Way We Eat. Which was a compelling prequel to Eating Animals. The heart of this section seems to be the question that Singer and Mason state on page 132, “What is the ethical response to such a state of uncertainty? First, do not self-aggrandize and think that you are the end-all be-all perfect consumer and global citizen ...

New York, New Fork: Hummus.

http://anewfork.blogspot.com/2009/07/hummus.html

New York, New Fork. Monday, July 27, 2009. First things first, you probably don't need two full cans of beans. It filled our food processor to the top and made way too much hummus. I always over-make. But, as we started to add stuff I forgot about quantity and focused on quality. We simply added fresh lemon juice, olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic. Then we added more garlic. Then more. When he wasn't looking, I would throw more in and when I wasn't looking, he'd throw more in. July 31, 2009 at 10:11 PM.
