It is housed in a red brick school building built by the Catholic church for its first school, and is listed as an Official Texas Historical Site. The museum is dedicated to preserving the heritage the Pioneer implanted in this county, exhibiting the theme of "How Our Pioneers Lived, Worked and Played". Major restoration was performed along with developing a flower garden area in the back area around a newly built elegant old-fashioned gazebo. The house has been designated a Texas Historical Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission and is entered in the National Register of Historic Places. Located in Hereford, TX. EB Black Historical House. Erastus “Deaf” Smith. August 2nd, 2013. Erastus “Deaf” Smith was born in New York in 1787. He immigrated to Mississippi Territory with his parents in 1798, and in 1821 came to Texas, then a part of Mexico, to remain permanently. His poor health improved in the new environment, but his hearing remained defective. In 1822 he married Guadalupe Ruiz de Duran, a widow with several children, and they subsequently had four children. The Nine Lives of Deaf Smith.
