Delta's D&D Hotspot: What is the Best Combat Algorithm?
http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2009/07/what-is-best-combat-algorithm.html
Math, history, and design of old-school D&D. Thursday, July 16, 2009. What is the Best Combat Algorithm? Throughout the history of D&D and RPG's (and more generally, any action/ wargame), there have been a host of different algorithms to determining success in combat and other feats of skill and luck. For example: to-hit-tables, THACO, compare to increasing AC score, etc. Is it one of the aforementioned algorithms, or something different? THACO ALGORITHM: d20 mods ≥ THACO* - AC. The THACO was itself dete...
Delta's D&D Hotspot: First Post! Original D&D
http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2007/03/first-post.html
Math, history, and design of old-school D&D. Sunday, March 11, 2007. Hi there, I'm Delta and I'm a complete old-school D&D junkie. I've started this blog to jot down random thoughts as I study old D&D texts and think about the game. Frankly, I haven't played a game of D&D in about 1.5 years, since moving from Boston to New York City, at which point I lost my playgroup. Prior to that we had met every week for 5 years running (since about a year before the release of 3rd Edition D&D). For a given adventure!
Delta's D&D Hotspot: Grimm Legacies
http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2015/07/grimm-legacies.html
Math, history, and design of old-school D&D. Monday, July 13, 2015. A nice review of various recent books considering the legacy and evolution of the original Grimm Brothers books of fairy tales. I particularly like the call for a "tone licked clean", especially in the context of an Original D&D style game, where the raw material is very curt, and the work is given life through live play and story-telling. (Thanks to Jonathan Scott Miller. For the link.). Rescuing Wonderful Shivery Tales. OED: Book of War.
Delta's D&D Hotspot: Vault of the Drow in Dragon 298
http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2015/05/vault-of-drow-in-dragon-298.html
Math, history, and design of old-school D&D. Friday, May 22, 2015. Vault of the Drow in Dragon 298. One last thing in the wake of my AD&D Module D3, Vault of the Drow. Game mentioned last week: Loren Rosson on his blog pointed me to the expansion of the Vault of the Drow, in particular detail on the depraved capital city, in Dragon Magazine. 298, August 2002 ( link. For me, it hits just the right note of total nightmare mixed with some subtle black humor. The other Drow articles in this issue would b...
Delta's D&D Hotspot: HelgaCon VIII – Outdoor Spoliation 3
http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2015/05/helgacon-viii-outdoor-spoliation-3.html
Math, history, and design of old-school D&D. Monday, May 18, 2015. HelgaCon VIII – Outdoor Spoliation 3. At HelgaCon in early April, for each of the last few years I've run a medium-to-high-level game (8th level PCs) set on the Outdoor Survival. Another change is that as of this year we're using my revised Book of Spells, 2nd Edition. To the limit). One change I made is to have the 4th-level extend spell. Which doubles the speed of up to 20 creatures. So whereas the party had in prior years loaded up...

Welcome to MartinRalya.com, home of Yore. Category Archives: Reading Appendix N. July 17, 2013. Reading Appendix N: The Chronicles of Amber, by Roger Zelazny. My high school girlfriend introduced me to the Amber series back in the early 1990s, and shortly thereafter to Amber Diceless Role-Playing, the RPG based on the books. Zelazny, like a lot of Appendix N authors, writes with economy and punch. Nine Princes in Amber grabbed me with its opening sentence, “It was starting to […]. Nine Princes in Amber.

Elliott's Ale House - An Old School Gaming Blog. Sunday, November 13, 2016. To Nulb and the Temple of Elemental Evil. I apologize for the lengthy delay since my last post, I took an unexpected month-long hiatus earlier this Fall from running any of my Roll20 games. Then it took a few game sessions to accumulate enough new material to post about. Anyway, on with the story:. The party Halfling ingratiates himself with the Nulb locals, buying drinks and dancing and singing on the table top. It didn't take l...

Heathen's Heartbreaker: August 2010
http://heathensheartbreaker.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Gaming, one wordy paragraph at a time. Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Units for the D&D Endgame, Part II: Time. Especially at higher levels, player characters sometimes undertake plans of action that take large amounts of time to come to fruition. The basic units of time larger than the days tracked in wilderness exploration are the week, fortnight, month, quarter, and year, none of which is entirely satisfactory, although months seem to be the most salient. February to mid-March) beginning with the Feast of ...

Math, history, and design of old-school D&D. Thursday, March 22, 2018. Paul's Gameblog: Ego Through the Ages. Over on Paul's Gameblog last month, he had a post: "Ego Through the Ages", looking at how the mechanic for magic swords overpowering your will was a moving target throughout the years (OD&D, Moldvay, AD&D, and 3E). I know I grapple with this somewhat awkward rule whenever it comes up in my OD&D games. Check out his analysis! Paul's Gameblog: Ego Through the Ages. Links to this post. As noted prev...
