About this blog and dementiachallengers.com. Caring for relatives with dementia. MEMORIES: Easy ways to capture the good times for your relative and family. Signposting carers of relatives with dementia to online resources. December 21, 2014. Nowadays Christmas is a bewildering blur of noise; loud music in shops and crowds of people make trips to the shopping centre unpleasant and confusing. Shop staff ask her “are you ready for Christmas? I chop the walnuts for the topping and mum pulls cherries from th...

I think this blog is so refreshing and brilliantly written. Your mum (as she was) would have been proud. I can’t wait to read more! Liked by 1 person. August 2, 2015 at 9:48 am. This is brilliant. I really hope it will help you and others deal with this horrible, but at times oddly funny, experience that you are going through with your mum. I got i...

You’ve got to be choking – Dementia; hard to swallow? April 19, 2016. April 19, 2016. 8211; i.e. problems swallowing. Now, anyone who knows their onions (and by that I mean anyone who knows about dementia) will tell you that issues with swallowing are common in advanced disease but I was always anticipating that we would get to the pureed food stage at about the same time as the wheelchair stage (and what a great stage that will be to look forward to! DON’T FOLLOW DAD! DON’T SIT ON THAT MAN! JUST SQUEEZE...

Dementiafest – taking mum to Camp Bestival. August 14, 2016. Currently in the mosh pit for Sticky Little Fingers. 8221; etc. He returned a few days later with a fake tattoo, a hoarse voice and more importantly, a spring in his step that we haven’t seen for ages (not the result of Uncle M’s pharmaceutical interventions – purely the music and ambience). Granddad will be right here in the beer tent! Clean compost toilets with plentiful loo-roll and alcohol hand gel? August 14, 2016 at 10:32 pm. You are comm...

A Weighty Issue – Obesity and Dementia |

A Weighty Issue – Obesity and Dementia. November 3, 2016. Dad is home and manages to get her back on her feet – despite this being the best option it is still likely to be painful and traumatic to both parties’ shoulders, backs and knees. Dad is home but cannot lift mum. Paramedics have to be called to assist. This would in no way constitute a medical emergency and could therefore result in a long stay on the floor. Mum is at home alone and sits tight on the floor for an unspecified period. Notify me of ...

Is it wrong to feel a tiny bit jealous of mum’s carer? February 14, 2016. August 16, 2016. About a year ago, after many months of unsubtle guerilla tactics, we managed to persuade dad to get a carer in to help mum for a couple of hours a week. For anyone who is currently considering this and struggling to convince either the person with dementia or the spouse of the person with dementia that they may need a little extra help can I share two useful little bits of advice:. Get carers in early. 3 thoughts o...

But a crime nonetheless,. I ask of the stranger. 8220;Now what have you done,. With the wonderful woman. Who once was my mum? But the thief smiles blandly,. She sits in her chair,. With her oversized clothes. And her Special Needs hair. Who thought it was right. To see us so tormented,. By watching our mum. I want to explain,.

The benefits of having a mother with dementia come to stay (not as miniscule a list as you may suppose). May 26, 2016. August 15, 2016. So this is one of those rare and wonderous things: a blog post about mum’s dementia that is not unremittingly bleak and does not make you feel suicidal to read it (hopefully; unless there are other reasons that my writing makes you suicidal in which case I suggest you unsubscribe immediately). Mum came to stay this weekend – and it wasn’t that bad! That was in the paper!
