Midland Railway Signal Box Types. This is intended as a very brief introduction to Midland Railway signal boxes and their categorisation. The primary source of information on this subject is Roger Newman. To whom I am most grateful (although any errors are mine! The box opened as Rufford Colliery Sidings on 21/03/1915, with the work being inspected on 05/10/1915 by Colonel Druitt. Druitt’s official sketch is shown below:. The box was recorded as having a 32-lever frame, of which 7 were spares. Seems I wasn’t the only photographer to climb signal 19 in pursuit of a panorama of the loaded sidings! 20185 and 20181 assemble their train on the 6th September 1981. A good selection of wagons are in the sidings. Class 20s 20185 and 20181 try to get up some momentum to take them towards Mansfield with a train from Clipstone Colliery. 20185 displays an interesting set of headcode marker lights while number 8 signal behind the box seems to have turned into an upper-quadrant….
