Derby Signalling History - Focus on Melbourne Junction

http://www.derby-signalling.org.uk/MelbJn.htm

Melbourne Junction signal box pictured from Osmaston Park Road bridge, taken by the late Godfrey Yeomans in May 1954. Sited 1mile 27 chains south of London Road Junction in Derby, it is almost superfluous to point out that it was here that the line to Melbourne branched off to the south east from the Down side of the former Derby and Birmingham Junction Railway. As the opening of the Melbourne branch on 1. Although no record of a new box at this time has been found it may be speculated that the change in...

Focus on Stenson Junction - www.derby-signalling.org.uk

http://www.derby-signalling.org.uk/StenJn.htm

It is unlikely that Stenson Junction was ever a quiet signal box. Although its erstwhile neighbour at Willington Junction was the first signal box in the area, Stenson Junction was to become renowned as one of the busiest signal boxes in the district. The area's railway history begins with the building of the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway line from Derby to Hampton in Arden, which had its opening ceremony on 5. Stenson Junction, at 4 miles 50 chains, came into being preparatory to the opening of ...

Derby Railway Signalling History - Research Resources

http://www.derby-signalling.org.uk/PRO.htm

The National Archives - Material Viewed. This document lists the material I have thus far viewed at the Public Record Office, Kew (now the National Archives. Of course) in my research into Derby Area Signalling. Obviously the comments concerning the usefulness of the material is relevant only to my research! Where I have copied diagrams and they are in electronic form a link is provided. Many thanks to “RHP” for alerting me to the broken links, which I hope are now all fixed). Signal Box opening times.

Derby Signalling History - Midland Railway Signal Box Types

http://www.derby-signalling.org.uk/MR_types.htm

Midland Railway Signal Box Types. This is intended as a very brief introduction to Midland Railway signal boxes and their categorisation. The primary source of information on this subject is Roger Newman. To whom I am most grateful (although any errors are mine! The earliest of the standard Midland boxes, not surprisingly, are categorised as “Type 1”. These are easily distinguished by the front windows of the operating floor being only two panes deep. Mainly due to a conscious effort ...C1870 – 1884.

The box opened as Rufford Colliery Sidings on 21/03/1915, with the work being inspected on 05/10/1915 by Colonel Druitt. Druitt’s official sketch is shown below:. The box was recorded as having a 32-lever frame, of which 7 were spares. The inspection sketch clearly shows the connection enabling ‘main-to-branch’ running (4) to be new (it’s in red), whilst the east-end connection (28/29) existing. The Down loop was commissioned on 21/05/1916, together with an additional No.3 siding, resulting in some r...

Seems I wasn’t the only photographer to climb signal 19 in pursuit of a panorama of the loaded sidings! 20185 and 20181 assemble their train on the 6th September 1981. A good selection of wagons are in the sidings. Class 20s 20185 and 20181 try to get up some momentum to take them towards Mansfield with a train from Clipstone Colliery. 20185 displays an interesting set of headcode marker lights while number 8 signal behind the box seems to have turned into an upper-quadrant…. Also attached is the earlies...
