Thorny Issues

Monday, January 1, 2018. Taking Stock - January 2018. Happy New Year’s! While it has been several years since I did a blog posting, you will find regular updates in the months and years ahead. I retired from teaching and staff training in the Ithaca City School District at the end of June 2017 after 32 years. I started in this field almost 42 years ago in the Bronx. How the years flew by. So, what have I been up to the past few years? I became a Consulting Rosarian with the American Rose Society. Through...

http://derrosenmeister.blogspot.com/2013/04/training-and-pruning-ramblers-normal-0.html

Tuesday, April 2, 2013. Training and Pruning Ramblers. 8221; Close friends knew that I was back outside working in my nursery and display gardens. The first step in pruning and training a rambler is to cut off last years flowering laterals. Ramblers also produce flowers on the ends of their canes. These need to be removed as well. (See next three images). Here is a close up of a cane before the flowering laterals are shortened. And now, after shortening. Starting at ground level, canes are carefully unta...

Thorny Issues: August 2011

http://derrosenmeister.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 21, 2011. How I Spent My Summer Vacation. What give me satisfaction and joy now? Tracking down old varieties that I’ve only read about. Seeing a rose bloom that I’ve never grown before. Propagating old varieties not commonly found in the trade. Watching someone get excited about her first rose. Watching a seasoned veteran get equally excited when I can offer them something they’ve been seeking. Looking at what I’ve accomplished at the end of a day. Taking time to smell the roses. We are a ...

Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Having Fun Getting Ready for High Rose Tide. From mid April through 4th of July, I spend every available daylight hour working outside to make the gardens here at Der Rosenmeister as beautiful as possible. Guess I was out in the sun too long when my friend, Alex Solla, of Alex Solla Photography took this pic. His daughter was helping edge the bed of roses along the driveway. When I saw this strip of sod, I couldn't resist! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Roses Are Plants Too.

Thorny Issues: January 2012

http://derrosenmeister.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 2, 2012. The past year has been a good one, though challenging. The economy has impacted buying habits. Consumers don’t have as much money for the “extras” like roses. But in these times, many of you have realized how important it is to enjoy simple pleasures, like appreciating the beauty and fragrance of roses you grow yourself and have purchased some for your gardens. Wishing you a year of peace, health, happiness and roses. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Welcome to Der Rosenmeister.

Our Story | Der Rosenmeister

http://derrosenmeister.com/our-story

Der Rosenmeister is the story of a hobby run amok! My grandmother, Sadie Wheat, loved growing roses. When she died, I got a cutting of one of her favorite roses, a once blooming rambler, Dr. Van Fleet. It was while trying to identify it that I got hooked on roses. I have been gardening since I was a young boy and growing roses for the past thirty years. During the school year, I am a teacher and staff trainer for the Ithaca City School District. Derrota Nacional

08 julio, 2006.
