Design Culture – Week 5. Design Culture Week 5. February 15, 2012. Tolbert Lanston lived on a farm most of his life and he contributed in the civil war. For 22 years he worked in the government and he studied law while working . His first patents for his typesetting machine, the Monotype were granted in 1885. After receiving these patents he left his job to pursue the perfection of his type setting machine and succeeded. The monotype ended up being developed and created in 1897. February 15, 2012.
