Designed to stitch

Sunday, 9 October 2016. In July I attended the inspiring Distant Stitch Summer School with Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn. This proved quite a pivotal weekend for various reasons. My mind is already buzzing with ideas on crosses and stars and I have already taken lots of pictures - all I need now is some of that elusive time to actually do something with them. Wednesday, 18 May 2016. I have got a bit behind with my Diploma course work but I do have a good excuse - my entry for the CQGB 2016 "On the Edge"...

Designed to stitch: June 2015

http://designedtostitch.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 9 June 2015. Module 1, Chapter 7. All samples are approximately 15 cm maximum. Sample 4 again uses the pattern from the doorway, this time in a more stylised form, sewn in various thicknesses and types of orange thread. The background is again felted using the embellisher, this time into a more structured light and dark grey grid pattern taken from the fishermen's chapel on page 34. Sample 5 refers back to the brass screen on page 35. It is hand dyed cotton on a piece of wadding, with the fa...

Designed to stitch: Module 1, Chapter 12

http://designedtostitch.blogspot.com/2015/11/module-1-chapter-12.html

Monday, 16 November 2015. Module 1, Chapter 12. I choose as my shapes for the next stages my dynamic spinning circle shape developed on page 91 and a section of my church tower drawing as highlighted by Siân in the previous feedback. I have since realised that I reversed the image in the process, but for the purposes of the exercise this makes no difference. Arrangement 1 reminds me of one of those wonderful spiky dahlias and could lend itself to making a corsage or fascinator. I find layout 6 below plea...

Designed to stitch: February 2016

http://designedtostitch.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 3 February 2016. Module 2, Chapter 1. The subject matter of this chapter could have been tailor-made for me and I realise that I have gone a bit overboard! To be honest, I could have easily produced double this amount but I appreciate that that would have been a bit disproportionate and I need to draw a line and get on. File:/ /Users/wendywingham/Dropbox/copier@livis.co.uk 20160202 182612.pdf. Reliquary box (Spanish) at the V&A. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Module 2, Chapter 1.

Designed to stitch: Module 1, Chapter 13

http://designedtostitch.blogspot.com/2015/11/module-1-chapter-13.html

Sunday, 8 November 2015. Module 1, Chapter 13. Few textile artists appear to have concentrated specifically on church architecture, but many have produced work inspired by it and for my first textile artist I shall look at the work of Wendy Dolan. Wendy is obviously a skilled artist and her architectural pieces rely heavily on. Her ability to produce an accurate drawing of a window, door or other architectural feature. A window in a Brighton church (from book). To explore them at some point.

http://designedtostitch.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, 8 May 2014. Module I, Chapter 4. This chapter has been fun. Pages 48 and 49. I identified shapes from my sketchbook over a period of days, with the sketchbook both upright and upside down. It is surprising how your eye sees different things at different times and from different aspects. Indentation. The shape was actually derived from the negative space behind the heads on page 27. On left, new shape created by tracing shape made by 4 shapes on previous page. Cut out shapes as per exercises 6 a...

Pickalili: Chapter 6Preparing fabrics to dye

http://pickalilitextiles.blogspot.com/2015/10/preparing-fabrics-to-dye.html

A place for me to chart my progress through City and Guilds Distant learning certificate with Sian Martin. Friday, 16 October 2015. Chapter 6Preparing fabrics to dye. Having read through the chapter. I decided to make a resist to paint over a piece of cotton, so I mixed flour and water to create a simple paste and painted it quite thickly onto the fabric. I tried to take a picture of the process, not a particularly easy task! Next simple Arashi Shibori tied and ready for the dyes to be dripped on. And wa...

A place for me to chart my progress through City and Guilds Distant learning certificate with Sian Martin. Friday, 11 September 2015. Machine strips and Chapter 4 Drawings from animal markings. Can't believe it's been so long since I last posted anything here. Things have been pretty busy and so the course work had to be put on hold. But I am back and hopefully able to stick at it more regularly from now on. I started by making 3 stitched strips to get me back into the swing of things. I thought I would ...

New or rather the not so new Chapter 10 Making ripples chenille orslashed reverse applique. Thanks for the feedback Sian I know that I have taken so long to complete this first module but I can't believe it's over a year! I had a quick go at this optional section of chapter 12. Firstly I painted the material with watered down acrylics. In this test I put 2 squares of diff...

A place for me to chart my progress through City and Guilds Distant learning certificate with Sian Martin. Friday, 25 October 2013. Thought I would have a play around in photoshop with one of my favourite coloured paper pieces. here are the results. I have only just started using photoshop, but I am quite please with the results, I know there is so much more that it can do. So my first idea for my resolved sample is one of these. Here is the reverse of the piece. The piece was then painted using fabric p...
