To encourage the international set to come here, the Sheikh put up the prize money, built world class stables and paid for all expenses. After 10 years, it is now on the circuit and not to be missed. Seven days in the Arabian Sea. Wednesday, March 23, 2005. We left Florence at 11h00 on a flight through Rome – don’t ask – to Frankfurt. Alitalia decided that we had too much weight (25 kg) so we were charged 275€. Yes, 11€ per kg! Took most of the day sitting in airports or planes to get to Frankfurt, and then stayed overnight at Steigenberger Airport Hotel, which we had been in before. Very comfortable and convenient to the airport. March 16 - Frankfurt. March 19 - fish market. March 20 - river cruise.

Seven days in the Arabian Sea. Wednesday, March 23, 2005. March 16 - Frankfurt. OK, not a good day. We started out great, with time at the spa and a massage, then off to the airport. We waited forever to check in, and then found out that the flight had been changed by Lufthansa, and it had left without us. So, back to the hotel, only to find out that it was full, as there is a business fair underway. Great. Back to the airport, and found the Novotel Airport Hotel, which was terrible. March 16 - Frankfurt.

Seven days in the Arabian Sea. Wednesday, March 23, 2005. March 20 - the Burj. The Burj Al - Arab Hotel. Rumoured to be a 7 star hotel, but actually the rating only gets to 5. Magnificent looking structure, designed to resemble a sail and built on a man made island in the water. Apparently the interior is somewhat gaudy, but we'd stay there! Suites start at US$1,350, in case you wondered). March 16 - Frankfurt. March 19 - fish market. March 19 - Emirates Palace. March 19 - tour of the Emirates Palace.

Seven days in the Arabian Sea. Wednesday, March 23, 2005. Jim and Valerie's home. Quick run early this morning, then expensive but lousy breakfast and off to the airport again. This time, no problems, easy check-in, smooth flight and arrived at 22h40 as scheduled. We were met by a prearranged airport facilitator and Jim and Valerie were there to take us home. This hotel and convention centre was built in 2.5 years to house the meeting held every two years of the sheikhs who run the seven Emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates. There are 3 floors in the lower level just for this meeting, one floor for their informal meetings and personal suites, and one floor for others in their entourage. March 16 - Frankfurt.
