Dianne Sutherland: April 2015

http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 29 April 2015. Day 13 and 14 Sidetracked by Vellum. I was sidetracked on day 13 and didn't paint or draw anything for the challenge! Instead I attended to a job that has been perplexing me since I returned home from London.the slight warping in my larger works on vellum! On day 13 I mounted the natural vellum and day 14 I started this painting of a magnolia leaf skeleton but didn't have time to finish it. The rabbit skin glue can be purchased in granules or sheets. The granules need to be ...

Dianne Sutherland: March 2014

http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Friday, 7 March 2014. Snake's Head Fritillary.an old favourite. I know I've blogged about painting Fritillaria meleagris. Before but I do like it! And so do lots of other artists, most notable of course are Rory McEwen's paintings. Which probably can't be bettered, but also Elizabeth Blackadder, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. And many more have painted Fritillaries. But today I painted this larger study ( x2). Study of flower head x2 in size ( 22 x 26 cm). There's something unique about the colour and patter...

Dianne Sutherland: The Sketchbook, Graveyard Studies, Day 21-30

http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-sketchbook-graveyard-studies-day-21.html

Saturday, 30 May 2015. The Sketchbook, Graveyard Studies, Day 21-30. Here is a selection of the final sketchbook drawings for the 30 day challenge, undertaken on days 21-30. Drawn as preparatory work for my big 'doodle' style drawing and also as reference for a new painting on vellum. All are local wildflowers, I've completed 12 sketches to date using the graveyard next door for inspiration. Day 21, Vetch, Vicia sepiens. Completely surrounds the grave of a woman named Kezia Beech, who died in 1877. I lik...

Dianne Sutherland: January 2015

http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 27 January 2015. Back to Vellum and the Blog's Birthday. Last week marked 7 years of blogging for me! It's been interesting to look back and see what's happened in that time. The first image I ever posted on the blog was my very first painting on vellum, so it seems fitting to write a post about my latest work on the surface. My most recent work on vellum, Three British Butterflies on manuscript vellum 2015 ( Comma, Red Admiral and Peacock abberation, painted life size). The process of building ...

Dianne Sutherland, Botanical Artist

http://www.diannesutherland.com/profile.html

Painter of plants, illustrator and arts tutor. After leaving art college my career as an artist began in the mid 1980's when I trained as a design technician with the Royal Albert. Design team, Staffordshire. This was where I first learned to paint intricate floral patterns on china. In 2004 I was accepted by the RHS picture Committee. Most recently I exhibited at the RHS Malvern Spring Gardening show with a collection of leaf sudies and again with reproducive mechanisms in 2012 and 2013. To read more ab...

Notes on Botanical Art. Over the coming months I plan to post a series of articles here; biographical, botanical and some hopefully useful notes on a variety of drawing and painting techniques. By way of introduction, the first in the series is a short essay on the late Arthur Harry Church, the Victorian scholar, botanist and illustrator whose work I have found particularly influential. Arthur Harry Church (1865-1937) Botanist and Illustrator. An essay about Church and his influence on my own painting.

Nature Trails 2014 - A Natural Sketchbook Exchange: May 2014

Friday, 30 May 2014. Before, during and after the block. S sketchbook. A bit late but that was fine. I got started on it and the painting went really well and relaxed. The subjects were mostly special Fritillarias. I knew Dianne really loves Fritillaria so the period I got her sketchbook was perfectly timed. I had to paint some Fritillaria for an other project. The other plant I painted was a twig of a Spiketail shrub I have in my garden. Stachyurus praecox is the Latin name. Wow it really went well!

Plant, vellum, Im all set to go!

Saturday, 3 June 2017. Botanical Drawing: Pencil Review, Caran d'Ache Grafwood. Today I tried out the Caran d'Ache Grafwood pencils to see how they compare to other pencil's, specifically with my old favourites the Faber Castell 9000. Check out the previous post '. To read about other brands. I decided to try the pencils out on a drawing of a mid pink single Rosa gallica. Flower because it wouldn't take too long, has a good range of tones and some fine detail in the venation and anthers. I compared a few...

Home - Dianne's Vegan Kitchen

Veggiegirl.com is now Dianne’s Vegan Kitchen! Veggiegirl.com came into existence 13 years ago when my Veggieguy said, You should have a website to help people go vegan. What do you want to call it? I shrugged and said, I don’t know. Veggiegirl? Because that was the first thing that came to mind. So Veggiegirl.com is now Dianne’s Vegan Kitchen. I’m holding on to the Veggiegirl URL for now, and anyone trying to reach the old site will be rerouted to the new one. Welcome to my new website! I'm Dianne and I ...
