Joseph Diggle lived in Tadcaster but in 1848 he bought three cottages and land opposite the Old Star public house in Clifford. This land stretched from the High Street across the village to Albion Street. He then built a Wesleyan school with a house for the schoolmaster and a new chapel (which is still a church), behind the school. As a local benefactor Joseph Diggle is also remembered for the financial support he gave to establish the Diggle’s First Fruits in 1851. You are here: .

Verse of the Day. Clifford Methodist Church is part of the Methodist Church. In the UK and is in the York and Hull. District. We share our minister with Boston Spa Methodist Church. And are in the Tadcaster circuit based at Tadcaster Methodist Church. Associated with Clifford Methodist Church is Diggle's First Fruits. A charity established to support young people in Clifford. Clifford is served by a Parish Council. And also has Roman Catholic and Anglican. One of our members runs a Holiday Cottage.
