Slates (Hallowell, ME) | diningsense

Skip to primary content. Slates (Hallowell, ME). August 14, 2014. Slates Signage; Taken from Facebook Page. I suppose that there is no clear answer, and that a dish can simply stay until it feels dated. This is an interesting dilemma to me, though, because it speaks to the way in which we expect restaurants to stay innovative while also crafting signature plates of food satisfying this tension between innovation and distinction seems to me to constitute the goal to which every restaurant aspires. I’ve or...

Things got back on track with this bread plate which included pumpernickel and a crusty sort of biscuit. I liked the fleur de sel they sprinkled on the butter. Foie Gras Terrine Wrapped in Nori, Pickled Rhubarb, Honey. Crush didn’t refer to it as a salad, but could one do so? Are salads considered more generic, or less predicated on a titular ingredient? Halibut Adver...

Skip to primary content. Niche (St. Louis, MO). May 18, 2015. Before ordering, we were served gratis cocktails (mine was non-alcoholic, my brother’s was not.). One of the big calling cards of this restaurant is their policy of sourcing everything from a 300-mile radius. According to the website:. At Alinea, this would certainly have been the latter, served with a sneer. At Niche, it felt more genuine a joke for us to enjoy, but also a welcoming gesture at the start of the meal. Sadly, while the E...Next ...

Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Fuel (Lewiston, ME). July 2, 2016. Perched in close proximity to Bates College, Fuel. For this midsummer meal, pork shank seemed too heavy, although there weren’t many light offerings either. I shared the charcuterie plate with my dad, and my mom chose the beat salad. My dad went with the burger for his main, while my mom and I chose mustard-glazed salmon with lentils. We also added the broccoli appetizer to augment the main courses. Dessert options inc...

Skip to primary content. Tru (October, 2014). January 3, 2015. Charger Plate at Tru. And does the dynamism of Martin (and his staff) necessarily correspond with culinary improvement? The first item was a comte gougere. These have been served since before my first meal here. Other bites included cold foie gras enveloped in a strawberry shell (delicious) and a raw tuna preparation. Very good. Dashi Custard, Yuzu Koshu, White Sturgeon Caviar. Seared Foie Gras, Chestnut Cream, Quince, Shaved White Truffle.

While I noshed each day, the focus of this post will be on my sit-down meals, starting with my hands-down favorite restaurant in the country: Eleven Madison Park. And her husband, The Oenophilist. And though my sweet tooth has dampened over the years, the brownie sundae finished tableside with rum caramel includes an ethereal set of textures: chewy cubes of brow...

If there was some way to ensure a future purchase would more closely match the description, I’d be willing to give this one another chance. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Monthly Archives: July 2014. Four Days in New York. July 2, 2014. It turns out four days of eating in New York is about as much as my body can handle. As I ambled to my final dinner at NoMad, all I could think about was raw nuts and fruit (and that’s exactly what I ate for my first meal back in Ann Arbor along with some of EMP’s irresistible granola). What could have possibly induced such banal cravings? And her husband. Our three-hour lunch was del...

Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Monthly Archives: June 2014. Torino, MI (June 2014). June 18, 2014. Over the past four years, dining in Michigan has often proved to be a trying ordeal, boasting all of the appeal of an hour-long Al Sharpton show.
