Discourse Toolbox

And What are they really saying? I have created a Toolbox of techniques to do this based on the theoretical field of Critical Discourse Analysis. There are 15 groups of tools in the Toolbox, and, as an introduction, I have used some of the tools from the toolbox to analyse a UK Government Food Policy text. Worked examples of using the tools are given in the orange box:-. A Site of Struggle. A summary of the complete Toolbox is given Here. With links to the tools used. I have created a companion website.

Discourse can be conveniently described as the great milling mass of thought, opinion, information, assessments, and so on, that fills millions of column inches of newspapers and magazines, and hours of radio, TV and conversations. This usage of discourse seems useful and relevant, and I will describe more fully how discourse may have developed, and some of the main 'structure and properties' of discourse itself. What is safe to eat? How can we get more of it? What is healthy to eat? Discourse may have b...

A Site of Struggle. Tool - Non-Matching Relations. If a discourse is a site of struggle or negotiation, then these sites are often marked in text by 'A and B' type statements where A and B are not comparable, and also by lists where the members of the list are not of the same type. There are many of these 'ands' and 'lists' in the text, and many of them show a tension between economic and green interests, e.g. A2 has 'modern, sustainable, competitive ….'. However, objective O2 is different, as follows:-.

The Toolbox, an overview. The Discourse Analysis Toolbox has the following major categories:-. Detailed examination of the chosen discourse strand. In my example. I examine a single document - the UK Government 'aims and objectives' strand for environment, food and rural affairs, for 2001. This strand can be examined for the discourse themes. Planes, positions, synchronic and diachronic factors. I describe these theories in greater detail here. Larger corpora of material can also be examined. Global Tren...

Discourse is clearly a socio-political reality, otherwise, what are the newspapers full of? But, it also seems like a separate world, though it is influential and understandabler:-. There is no direct. Connection to anything else. Other types of thoughts, events, objects and so on ARE referred to and used in discourse. But, these events and objects are transformed when they are taken into discourse. However, beginning with Foucault in The Archaeology of Knowledge, a new concept of the dispositive was dev...

Interpersonal Dimension - The Imaginary Reader . . . . . . . Toolbox. Section 4 - the readers of the text. I have developed this tool from a paper by Malcolm Coulthard (1994), On analyzing and evaluating written text. In: Coulthard, (ed.) Advances in Written Text Analysis. To keep the text manageable, the writer will have an idea (an ideational content) and an imaginary reader. Which will help to keep the ideational factors within manageable limits. Pleased to see particular phrases in the text. Iii Subs...

I am developing a range of other services based on academic techniques :-. Text and Discourse Analysis Toolbox. Details of this are here. I have also applied the toolbox and many other techniques to UK Government food policy on a seperate site here. I am developing this service, and the raw material for it can be found in my Context Analysis of the food and farming sector, which is here. Included the beginning of the analysis process, which I am developing further. I am continuing to do My Own Writing.

The Discourse of Food

http://www.food.woodlands-web.com/summary.htm

The UK Governments 'Aims and Objectives' for food and farming (2001) have been examined using an Analysis Toolbox, and the following main points have been drawn from this:-. They adopt many of the major discourses in the field. They try to satisfy most of the major lobbying groups. There is a careful balance between green and economic interests. They attempt to please and unite everyone - no-one could object to the policies. There are clear 'sites of tension' in the text, such as one involving forestry.

The field, the map, and the players. I have created a survey of more that 60 websites. Relating to food and farming. These sites represent the reality that we live in, and it is quite diverse:-. It ranges from History. The field). 100 years ago nearly all ploughing was done by horses - there have been massive technical changes in all aspects of agriculture. Skimmming through these pages, we can form our own mental map of the state of play for food and farming in the UK. The introduction to the survey.

I have built seperate pages for each of these to explain them more. None of these services are THE ANSWER™, but then, nothing is THE ANSWER. What is really going on? What are they really saying? This service has now developed massively as I have developed my Discourse Analysis Toolbox. What do you want from life and how can you get it?

The Discourse of Food

http://www.food.woodlands-web.com/intro.htm

I am interested in Government policy, and I have also been interested in food issues for many years, so I have decided to study UK Government food policy. The key question for this project is What does the Government think about food and farming? Food and Policy Home Page. Index of main topics of interest. The Context of Food Policy. In-depth analysis of sub-topics. These policy and analysis issues may not immediately seem relevant, but. Perhaps a further 10% are employed in 'the health sector'. This ana...

In-depth Analysis of Sub-topics. The previous section on policy analysis focusses on some of the techniques that are avialable to look at a text in greater depth. In this section I have taken an alternative approach, concentrating on some of the sub-topics (sub-themes) which are contained in the chosen text. That is, I am trying to investigate further :-. What does the Government think about Animals? Are there any psychological issues here? How does the Government see itself, what is its role(s)?

This has been a very wide-ranging study, and my main conclusions are:-. On the basis of my Context Survey and Analysis, it is possible to state that there is a major historic process of industrialisation resulting in a high-tech food production industry. There is no more farming. The Government's Aims and Objectives do not refer to or engage with the industrialisation process. On the basis of my sources, I think my conclusions are justified. In this Section, I examine the Government's role in more detail:-. An overview of the operations of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (below). The Aims and Objectives of the Department. The way the Aims and Objectives are presented within the Departmental Report. The various roles played by these Aims and Objectives. Details of the sources and documentatiion I have used in this study can be examined. An overview of the operations of DEFRA. Some features of the 2003 page are:-.

In the next section I look in greater depth at some sub-topics, and the following sections develop the analysis deeper. In the Government and Policy pages. I have selected the Aims and Objectives of DEFRA for analysis. This is the key UK food policy text, and I have looked at the part that this text plays in the work of the Department.
