Membership

The CDLC is a membership organization. As such, it is composed of three kinds of members, each of whom has representatives on the Board. These three kinds of members include (1) professional foreign-language organizations, (2) institutions with Level 3-4 teaching or research programs, and (3) individual members. American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages. American Councils for International Education. Center for Applied Linguistics. National Foreign Language Center.

With time, the CDLC plans to make mini-grants to affiliates and individuals associated with the CDLC. These grants may be used for any of the activities listed below. Jump-start a project which cannot be funded through traditional sources. Provide stop-gap funding for projects temporarily without a funder. Provide supplemental funding for projects funded by other sources. Provide travel funds for Level 4 conferences, symposia, and working group meetings.

1 Can Level 4 be taught in a classroom? The Specialized Language Training Center in Rockville, Maryland, which is a member of the CDLC, has routinely helped students to reach Level 4 and higher since 1987. Again, pre-testing and post-testing determines the success rate. The Coalition of Distinguished Language Centers conducts annual (and, in some years, semi-annual) conferences about teaching to and reaching Level 4 (near-native) proficiency. The conferences include theory and research, as well as updates on high-level-language program activities, along with a healthy dose of shared practical experience.
