Henry Whitfield State Museum, Guilford - Jerry Dougherty. Guilford, in New Haven County, is located in southern Connecticut on the Long Island Sound. Originally called Menunkatucket, the Quinnipiac sold it, along with land stretching from present day Niantic. Led by Henry Whitfield. It was settled in 1639, renamed Guilford, and admitted to New Haven Colony. In 1643. One of the few shore towns to escape British attack in the Revolutionary War. Guilford citizens organized a raid on British provisions.

Detail of Albert A. Pope, 1900 - Connecticut Historical Society. Albert Augustus Pope (1843-1909). Albert Pope was a transportation pioneer who helped turn Hartford. Out of his desire to see the US improve its transportation networks. Toward the end of the century, Pope redirected his efforts toward producing automobiles, but the prohibitive costs associated with acquiring the necessary raw materials did not allow him to compete with the Midwestern manufacturers who went on to dominate the industry.

Albert Pope Pioneered Bicycles for Women. Columbia Bicycle Model 105, 1903 - Connecticut Historical Society. Hartford-based inventor Albert Pope. Saw his first bicycle at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and was so impressed that he went to Europe to study how bicycles were made.
