Doing something positive

On 16 June 2009, Steve was diagnosed with mesothelioma - an aggressive cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, for which there is no known cure at present. This blog is my record our feelings, our actions and the outcome of our attempts to deal with this disease. If nothing else, it will be a way to let family and friends know what's happening. I hope that sharing this experience will help others in this position and raise awareness of mesothelioma.

Doing something positive: January 2015

http://doingsomethingpositive.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Monday, 19 January 2015. There was a very bleak period back in November and early December when life appeared to be slowing to a halt as a result of disease progression, pain, appetite loss, weight loss, and hair loss .all overshadowed (and no doubt influenced by) the doctor's prediction that without further treatment Steve's life expectancy was probably a small number of months. Made good progress on house projects. The big clear out and declutter continues and we've now freed up another room, which wil...

Doing something positive: August 2014

Wednesday, 27 August 2014. Moving the goal posts. It's been one of those weeks when someone keeps moving the goalposts. As a result, it feels like we have been going one step forward and two steps back . We had made travel and accommodation arrangements for a trip to Heidelberg, cutting short our planned stay to accommodate Steve's next hospital appointment on 29 September, only to get a letter yesterday saying that the appointment had been put back a week, so we could have stayed longer after all. About...

Tuesday, 30 September 2014. On trial: Day 1, Cycle 1 of AZD0424. The phone call came through yesterday.all Steve's test results are good; he's clear to start the new early phase trial. Early start this morning.no breakfast for Steve as he has to take the capsules on an empty stomach. No breakfast for me either.not enough time before leaving the house at 7.45am to get to the hospital in time for the appointment. At least he has a good appetite at the moment. We are back again tomorrow for the 24 hour bloo...

Sunday, 28 June 2015. A midnight dip in the Med and more tales from Malaga. In Malaga on 23 June, the locals celebrate " La Noce de San Juan. By gathering on the beach as night falls, sharing food and drink with family and friends. Bonfires are lit and those with the skill, energy and nerve take turns to jump over the fire three times.supposedly to purify and cleanse the soul and burn away troubles - but these days more likely to show off acrobatic skills! http://doingsomethingpositive.blogspot.com/2015/07/we-have-plansort-of.html

Tuesday, 28 July 2015. We have a plan.sort of. Following our recent meeting with Hannah, the Oxford meso nurse specialist, Steve contacted our friend and former neighbour who works as an oncologist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, to talk about the pros and cons of treatment using a drug called vinorelbine. In the meantime we are going to make the most of summer, even if is unseasonably cold, wet and windy at the moment. To find out what we've been up to so far, please read my next post! Treme...

Novelist Jan - Bear Boy Vampire Series: Ready to go

http://novelistjan.blogspot.com/2013/11/ready-to-go.html

Novelist Jan - Bear Boy Vampire Series. First Book The Dreamweaver's Choice. I could have written a good book about the nine years to date that I have battled Mesothelioma, but I thought maybe a good fiction novel would be a way to bring in funds for a much needed cause. We need funds to find a cure for this cancer that leaves no one standing. It isn't a horror with lots of killing but a good story where good outwits evil, a good read along the way with some interesting twists. Sunday, 24 November 2013.

Doing something positive

Friday, 16 February 2018. Well Steve, we have reached the second anniversary of your death. Your last Valentine to me has pride of place on the mantelpiece, as it did last year and the year before. I was stirred yesterday morning by bright sunshine slanting through the blinds and it took a few seconds to wake up properly before the significance of the date kicked in. I confess I shed a tear on reading lovely messages from friends who also remembered this anniversary. Wednesday, 15 February 2017. In some ...
