Dónal Deery's Textualities Blog. This is my blog for the 'Textualities' seminar. The Age of the Database. I have just finished reading. The Language of New Media. By Lev Manovich. The book is an attempt to situate ‘New Media’ in relation to pre-existing media forms in order to define what exactly makes new media different from old. For Manovich, it is not sufficient to examine new media solely by utilising the same methods developed to analyse ‘old media’ such as print, photography or television. [1].

The blogosphere is awash in students.’. I hope these seem like reasonable and/or relevant observations. I don’t have a blog or contribute to fora,* and my area of interest as regards new media would be far closer to Alan Liu’s big picture approach to questions of the future, determinism and so on. Which is not to suggest for a moment...I rea...

Dónal Deery's Textualities Blog. This is my blog for the 'Textualities' seminar. Month: January, 2012. January 18, 2012. I think that most people are agreed that computing will continue to expand into more and more areas of our lives in the coming decades. (At least in the ‘first world’, and barring of course the advent of an apocalypse such as that depicted in. Or one of a more interesting type, as occurs in Margaret Atwood’s. Can now provide the first two of these services via the third. I hope to retu...

Kiss me, Kate. Alan Crosbie has it right! I would assume that what I am told in a lecture is true and half of what my friend tells me is false. What I hear on the radio is based in fact and the emails I get are fact. But what about everything else? How much of the information which we get every day is fact and how much is fiction? Not to mention the sheer amount. Tabloid papers I am not too fond of, yet when I see some of the headlines that they decide to go with I cannot help smiling. When it comes to t...

A review of Aimee Morrison’s Blogs and Blogging . April 5, 2012. The article can be found here. The necessity for something such as Rebecca Blood’s blogosphere ethics, titled ‘Rebecca’s Pocket, illustrates just how many blogs exist. The scope of her site is impressive. While such a vast project is admirable, it does seem naïve and idealistic to imagine her principles will not be quickly submerged by the waves of impatient newcomers. Morrison concludes by declaring that blogging has had its fifteen minute...
Price | Leahtopia

Kiss me, Kate. I really love the idea of Scholarly online libraries; I think the idea of a huge library being available at your fingertips is brilliant. That a whole library of information is only a click away! Price was writing about how the people that compile the libraries are, in a sense, in control of what we see. That some web libraries can be biased for instance if they had a specific feminist or anti-racist agenda then they would specifically choose articles that helped their case. Kiss me, Kate.
