Don't Fear the Ink: February 2009

http://www.dontfeartheink.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Don't Fear the Ink. Don't fear the ink. The ink is your friend." That is what I tell my students, and I believe it - on alternating Tuesdays. February 11, 2009. 50 Cent Word a la Durkheim. All Sociology students read Durkheim. As an anthro undergrad I read Durkheim. And now I am preparing a lecture and activity for Intro to Soc class based on an excerpt of Durkheim's The Rules of Sociological Method. What a way with words they had in 1892-1895ish. 1) I'm pretty sure this is a translation from French.

Don't Fear the Ink. Don't fear the ink. The ink is your friend." That is what I tell my students, and I believe it - on alternating Tuesdays. Instead of getting stuck on, "How did I get through high school and college without learning this? I'm putting my energy into helping my social sciences students learn these lesson before they graduate college. Fingers crossed. For these postings, check the "Ink" label. Don't Fear the Ink: December 2008

Don't Fear the Ink. Don't fear the ink. The ink is your friend." That is what I tell my students, and I believe it - on alternating Tuesdays. December 8, 2008. I've noticed an annoyingly persistent trend in my students' papers. I call it the Encyclopedia Paper. I've observed this phenomenon for three terms now. I want to know more about it, so I can figure out how to make it go away. This is how I think it works:. 1 Start with a paper topic. Let's say, AD/HD. 2 Avoid forming (or conforming) to a thesis.

Don't Fear the Ink: September 2009

Don't Fear the Ink. Don't fear the ink. The ink is your friend." That is what I tell my students, and I believe it - on alternating Tuesdays. September 17, 2009. Don't worry. It's good.). Last Wednesday evening I had a class from 5:30 pm until 8:20 pm. Trust me, teachers loathe this time block as much as students do. Sitting still and paying attention for extended periods of time doesn't get much more enjoyable with age, experience, or a change of role in the classroom. Random confluence of events? You k...

Don't Fear the Ink. Don't fear the ink. The ink is your friend." That is what I tell my students, and I believe it - on alternating Tuesdays. January 30, 2009. What Did I Say In Class Yesterday? Hello Students of Abnormal Psychology - the lucky ones in my Spring term writing intensive class! I almost wrote abnormal psychology students. See the picture with three words on it? The original is on my office wall over my desk. I'm going to explain what these words have to do with a) my. I'm not sure about thi...

The Brothers Slack: Tales of Slack: Chapter 3

http://thebrothersslack.blogspot.com/2009/03/tales-of-slack-chapter-3.html

Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Tales of Slack: Chapter 3. I highly doubt Keven fell down.". The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium. Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. Years later. . .1998. The bar was not full. Just patrons on the fringes, kind of like moss on a brick wall, you know, creeping in on the edges. The problem was I knew it should be full by now and that worried me. I saw Rob in position near the pay phone, but couldn’t see where Kamal was. Had he slipped in while my back was turned? 8221; The waitress asked.

The Brothers Slack: Hey. . .you kids like poetry??

http://thebrothersslack.blogspot.com/2009/03/hey-you-kids-like-poetry.html

Sunday, March 1, 2009. Hey you kids like poetry? Here's a poem I wrote back in 1993. It’s the only one I've written and I'm not too inclined to write another . . . however, as always, I am keen to share it. It is primarily about:. Stained glass etched in frost. Or green leaves turning gold. I always get hopelessly lost. In a gaze that never grows old. Reflecting a starry night. Emitting intelligence, oh so bright. Expressing passion or pain. Smiling while walking in the rain. Or emeralds set in gold.

The Brothers Slack: Still Monitoring the Midlife Crisis Situation

http://thebrothersslack.blogspot.com/2009/02/still-monitoring-midlife-crisis.html

Saturday, February 28, 2009. Still Monitoring the Midlife Crisis Situation. Since I've arrived in my 40's, I try to keep up a healthy dose of self reflection to determine whether or not I'm having a mid-life crisis (I don't want to be that guy). Anyways, I'm all about introspection. So here's how it works, I looked "Mid-life crisis" up in Wikipedia and I'm using the following as my working definition/parameters:. Comparisons: 31 and 41. As far as friends go, back at age 31 my best friends were in Memphis...

The Brothers Slack: Tales of Slack: Chapter 12 (part 4)

http://thebrothersslack.blogspot.com/2009/03/tales-of-slack-chapter-12-part-4.html

Saturday, March 7, 2009. Tales of Slack: Chapter 12 (part 4). Scully's Bar. The Tenderloin, San Francisco. 1996. Dan Ork." He said as he walked up. He always called Matthew, "Ork," but I can't remember why. I think Frankie once said he used to play Dungeons and Dragons and Matthew reminded him of a juvenile Ork. That sounds faintly familiar so let’s go with that. After Andie got her stuff together, she got out of the passenger side and waved as she flashed us a smile. You call your station wagon the ".

The Brothers Slack: July 2009

http://thebrothersslack.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 5, 2009. My yard does not get mowed, mainly because I have no lawn. My front yard is the Atlantic Ocean and my backyard is a forest. It appeared to be waiting for me to die so it could pluck out my eyeballs. Ravens do that, I think. The fog has been pretty much a constant the last week (it actually broke today) and here are some photos taken along my foggy jogging trail (which is also my driveway):. Links to this post. The Brothers Slack: Me and Elvis (2010 Edition)

http://thebrothersslack.blogspot.com/2010/08/me-and-elvis-2010-edition.html

Tuesday, August 3, 2010. Me and Elvis (2010 Edition). When me and Elvis were in the Army, we were both armor crewmen in the same tank crew. Elvis was the loader and I was the driver. The rest of the four-man crew was the gunner, Rosecki (from Minnesota) and Morris was the tank commander. We were doing a twelve day training session at Fort Knox. Fortunately, he was only a little stiff, but his leather boot was actually torn at the ankle. I was living in Richardson Towers Dormitory. Are they tied to a dock?

redcatblackcat: breadtoy

http://redcatblackcat.blogspot.com/2013/11/breadtoy.html

Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Ooh, breadtoy, breadtoy! I have to take it up from the floor and onto the bed, so that I can cover the sheets all with crumbs! I will bat it and whack it and bite it and gnaw it and thwack it from here over to there! I shall hit it with left paw, and hit it with right, and poke it under the blanket it and snag it right back! I will jump at it, pounce on it, paw at it, look confused by it, snack on it a bit, and then leap away! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

redcatblackcat: August 2011

http://redcatblackcat.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Faith is a very effective technology for maintaining emotional equilibrium even when perceived facts warrant otherwise. This might sound like a cynically sarcastic criticism, but it's actually a flat-out compliment. And that in turn might sound like a cynically utilitarian observation. There is, however, a whole bunch of heft beyond that, too. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Don't fear the ink.

redcatblackcat: April 2010

http://redcatblackcat.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 18, 2010. Cows deride the pasta tenses, and recalcitrant pickle rhetoric. Life is a lot more fun if you see difference more as an opportunity than as an annoyance. So, tell me why. Saying we only need one language is like saying we only need one song. A stack o' stuff. Smallbits are tasty easy fun. After losing so many hours of years. To the deep low drone,. To the grey wet wool blanket. That sogs you sad. Leaves you slow and cold. With the only flame burning. In the eating of your self.

Last fall, I attended several great shows in Chicago, notably Sigur Ros and Stevie Nicks with the Pretenders. I also saw Kishi Bashi, who is a very underrated performer. Was a nice gig, and I got to attend the 2016 Grammy Awards as a member of the press, something I will always consider a great career achievement. Saturday, July 9, 2016.
