The Hatfield Knob elk viewing tower is located just off of hwy 25W between Lafollette, TN and Jellico, TN. It's a very mild gravel road that offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside. The trip is worth it for the views, but be prepared to hike if you're heading to the tower. We walked at least a half mile from the end of the trail and never spotted the tower.

I bought my 2000 Wrangler in March 2010. It had 31inch AT's but was otherwise pretty much stock. There was also a soft top under the hard top still in the factory configuration. I'm pretty sure it had never seen so much as a gravel road in it's life. The guy I bought it from was the second owner and he had pulled it behind his camper for years. Once I started off roading it, I realized there were some upgrades that I needed to make. Update 11-2012: Last spring I changed my front springs out to 3 inch spr...

East Royal Blue WMA. We started exploring on the east side of Royal Blue WMA with some friends from the Knox Offroad Club. This was really my first time off roading and was rather exciting. Access to the Jeep trails in the Royal Blue WMA is from I-75 exit 141.

Most of the trails have been closed as of August 2013! It seems we've lost another great place to ride. Pickett State Forest and Park are located north of Crossville, TN just west of Big South Fork. On the TN/KY border. From interstate 40 in Crossville you'll take hwy 127 north to Jamestown and then pick up hwy 154 north until you reach the forest. We explored a couple of different areas in the forest:.

Chinquipin Offroad is a privately owned rock crawling park in Sneedville, TN. It is only open by appointment and for special events. As Jeff mentions on his website it's not a place to trail ride with the family. I've been there on a couple of occasions during events and I can assure you it is not for the faint of heart. Be sure to check out their website for events and directions: http:/ www.chinquipinoffroad.com.

The main entrance to the Windrock aka Coal Creek OHV area is accessed through Oliver Springs, TN. This is one of the best riding areas in our region with miles and miles of well marked trails to explore that are very well maintained by the Coal Creek staff. The biggest drawback to Windrock is cost. A daily pass is $17 and a yearly pass is $88 per person. Unless you're just starting out and want to test the waters or are an out of towner, the yearly pass is definitely the way to go.

The Norris Watershed is located adjacent to Norris Dam State Park. There are several entrances to the trails, but the easiest and likely most popular is Lower Clear Creek. Most of the trails in the watershed are very mild, and can be handled without 4wd. Keep in mind that there are bike riders and horses on the trails with you and we encountered several on our trip. Also leave your ATV at home, it's illegal to ride them in the watershed.

The Petros area netted several new trails. We headed north out of Petros on hwy 116. This led us past the old Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary that's being decommissioned by the state and up a very steep mountain. Once we arrived at the top we came to an area that had trails entering from both sides of the road.
