We checked out of our motel in Nelson and drove to Motueka, stopped for lunch, had a tasty fish chowder and garlic bread, and then drove on to Marahau. We then drove down the hill to the park entrance and walked onto the Abel Tasman trail.

Only tour companies with permits from the NZ Department of Conservation can go out on the spit, so taking a tour is the only way to see it. It is desolate and beautiful. We stopped at several placed on our way to the lighthouse at the end of the spit.
