We did it all for the Glory of Love. Jun 19th, 2015 at 2:44 PM. A SF/F/H author whose books I will buy sight unseen is. There are more than a few. Jim Butcher, Jo Walton, China Mieville, Neal Stephenson, Barbara Hambly, Ann Leckie, Diane Duane, Max Gladstone. but for purposes of this discussion, let's say Barbara Hambly. My favorite book by that author is. Published in the US as Stranger at the Wedding. The most recent new-to-me SF/F/H author I discovered was. One of my favourite SF/F/H authors is. She's...

A Political Education: September 2007
http://politicaleducation.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 26, 2007. This blog has been sitting dormant now for over a year. There are two main problems with its central theme of a learning process concerning global geo-politics, and one lesser one (which might be a much bigger question, really). 1 My Time and Interest. 2 Neutral Sources and Neutral Writing. Posted by Drew Shiel @ 9/26/2007 11:51:00 am. Political and economic thinking from a largely non-political Irish bloke. The New Global Economy is Local. Food Shortage and Western Impacts.

A Political Education: July 2005
http://politicaleducation.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 08, 2005. Vladimir Putin and Russia. This is not on topic for either of my current research areas, but interesting nonetheless. The Guradian have a long article on state control of Russian resources and media. And the power President Putin wields. I think Russia and the ex-USSR might form a good topic for future research - there's certainly plenty of material there to examine. Posted by Drew Shiel @ 7/08/2005 10:08:00 am. Thursday, July 07, 2005. I've now decided on two issues I want to take...

A Political Education: Economies after the Decline of Capitalism
http://politicaleducation.blogspot.com/2008/10/economies-after-decline-of-capitalism.html
Thursday, October 16, 2008. Economies after the Decline of Capitalism. There have been predictions for years of the crash of civilisation, due to running out of oil. Catastrophic climate change, or even epidemics. Few enough people have taken seriously the idea of a crash due to capitalism failing, though. For what it's worth, I don't think it's likely, even with panicky stock markets, falling currencies, banks in trouble, and so on, that capitalism will fall. I don't think it's possible, or even desirab...

A Political Education: The Lisbon Treaty
http://politicaleducation.blogspot.com/2008/05/lisbon-treaty.html
Thursday, May 22, 2008. I've been asked - like, actually, seriously asked - for my opinion on the forthcoming Lisbon Treaty referendum in Ireland, by three separate people now (and jokingly by half a dozen more). So here goes - this was originally a comment on someone else's blog, edited here for usefulness. There are two referenda we actually need to have:. One that leaves us with a situation where the government can do what we're paying them to do, instead of spending ludicrous. Amounts of money asking...

Cotswolds and England - Duke Street Alley
http://gothwalk.livejournal.com/589826.html
We did it all for the Glory of Love. Jan 21st, 2015 at 2:59 PM. We're currently on holiday in the Cotswolds. It's a grey, damp day out there, and both of us had SCA paperwork to complete, so we're making use of the wifi connection in the cottage. It's not as good as the connection at home, but it's still perfectly usable. I'm sure this is the result of being some sort of special conservation area. But the point is that we don't seem to be able to do that at all. I have been trying to think why. I've alwa...

A Political Education: Turkey, Armenia, and the US
http://politicaleducation.blogspot.com/2007/10/turkey-armenia-and-us.html
Thursday, October 11, 2007. Turkey, Armenia, and the US. There is a vote by a US congressional committee. Recognising as genocide the 1915-17 mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks. Apparently a sizable group of people of Armenian ancestry has been lobbying for this in the US for some time, and the Turks are furious about it, and moving towards cooperating less with the United States. Can we get something done about the Potato Famine in Ireland? Posted by Drew Shiel @ 10/11/2007 01:01:00 pm. China M...

A Political Education: The New Global Economy is Local
http://politicaleducation.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-global-economy-is-local.html
Friday, April 03, 2009. The New Global Economy is Local. There was an occasion last year in the US in which the imaginary money had to be reined in. Had it not, we're told, the US economy would have completely vanished down an equally imaginary plughole, leaving rather a vaccuum - all, essentially, by agreement. We're not finding a global solution because there is. It would make a lot more sense to decouple these. If you break the global system up into national, or even regional chunks, deliberately ...
