Hydration is probably the most important to get right. I remember watching my younger brother lose an important match from 5-2 up in a deciding set and not take on any liquid until the end of the match (8-10! During a match suitable snacks can make all the difference to keeping physically and mentally strong. I try and eat things to help my longevity in a match like bananas or carbohydrate energy gels. I also eat things to give me a short-term energy boost like wine gums and apricots. I am a big advocate...

The mental skills of tennis have been a big interest for me since my mid-teens. I have always been a very competitive person and that could often lead to much frustration when things did not go my way. My rackets have taken a bit of abuse over the years and on one occasion I disproved my own theory that you could not break a racket on a grass-court! The realisation that my prized Wilson racket had a major crack in it is something I will always remember! Performing session after session over a period of t...

This suggests a player should have 5 main goals:. A Dream (long-term) Goal. This I suggest should be outcome orientated such as 'becoming a professional player' or 'winning a grand slam' etc. A season goal. Again I suggest this should be outcome orientated, such as 'to beat a certain opponent' or to win a certain event'. These should be players on going goals that are more performance or process orientated such as "I land my split-step every time my opponent hits the ball". Socialize with me on Twitter.

As I know from personal experience injuries are the most frustrating part of being a tennis player. In some cases they are unavoidable but if a player has efficient technique and a good strength and conditioning programme the risks should be vastly reduced. Here are the important things I have learnt from my injuries:. Cooling down and stretching after you play. This is an area I often overlook and I usually pay the next day! To find out more I have articles in my BLOG. Planning adequate rest and recover...

Here is the main literature and courses that have influenced my understanding of tactics:. LTA Level 3 Upgrade Course in 2009 at David Lloyd Beckenham Club. I was first introduced to the idea of tactical intentions and the importance for a player to have intention behind every shot they hit. The 6 tactical intentions are: trading; building; finishing; staying; neutralising; and turning around. On www.procomparetennis.net. There are some excellent articles on the tactical side of the game. I am a full-tim...
