As the owner of the Christian Heurich Brewing Company, he became the District's second largest landowner and largest non-governmental employer. As the active manager of the company at his death in 1945 at the age of 102, he was also the world's oldest brewer. In 2003 the Historical Society moved out of the house, deeding it to the Heurich House Foundation.
