Meanface Moments: Rec Center Pick Up
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/rec-center-pick-up.html
Thursday, December 22, 2011. Rec Center Pick Up. I ran on the treadmill Tuesday and got a mean look from a stranger playing basketball. He was big with big muscles and an enormous floppy head. I didn't like him the moment I saw him, but not for his size. Rather, I didn't like him for the way he was manipulating players on both teams, intimidating them and pushing them around. And he was not a good player. And he called fouls every time he touched the ball. Ah, hell, I'm bound up in this. Its nice to hear...

Meanface Moments: Long-Sticking Anger
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/long-sticking-anger.html
Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Okay, so here, maybe, is part of the problem with this training in masculinity. On my run today, I ran through an intersection where I had almost been hit once. I recalled that moment, and how the schmuck who'd almost hit me got pissed at me because his cell phone fell out of his hand when he slammed his breaks - despite the fact that I'd had the right of way. To what end does my (real or imagined) response lead? The more I thought about what a jerk the guy probably was all th...

Meanface Moments: Should I Scowl?
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/should-i-scowl.html
Saturday, December 17, 2011. This actually does feel like an appropriate moment to break out a meanface. I'm in a coffee shop - and I don't expect the coffee shop to be a library; I expect it to be a place of human interaction, of conversation, of debate and laughter - but the guy on the cell phone is too much. Or, if you do have to yell, go outside, right? Just go to Columbus - it's an hour away. Shorter, quieter discussions have gotten people across The Atlantic Ocean. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Meanface Moments: Headlock (1993)
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/headlock-1993.html
Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Here's another touching moment from my masculine childhood . . . His mom remarries the June after our ninth grade year, and he moves to a very nearby school, but still he moves. That summer is just like the last three, playing one-on-one to fifty, playing ping pong for hours, eating cookies late into nights while we play Nintendo, huddling in the dark until dawn talking about the great things we’ll do with women and other parts of our future. Meanface Moments: John McClane
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/john-mcclane.html
Wednesday, December 14, 2011. Because nothing particularly masculine happened to me today, but I do have some other writings in a similar vein, I'm going to include something I've already written. I call it "Hero":. At one point, the helicopter has John McClane pinned down on the roof of the. Nothing indicates this, but I get the feeling the building is so tall that one could see the tip of the antenna on the. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Other Blogs I Write. Meanface Moments
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/my-spouse-and-i-are-heading-over-to.html
Thursday, December 15, 2011. My spouse and I are heading over to the hardware store in a moment. In mentally preparing for this, I thought back to another time we were at such a place in a city we used to live in. We were in the plumbing section picking up a couple of basic drain connectors for a sink that the previous owners hadn't put much thought into. And before waiting for an anwer, the man looked at my spouse, crumpled his brow, grunted, and said, "Yeah, right." Then he turned and walked away.

Meanface Moments: Well, I Guess That'll Teach Me
http://meanfacemoments.blogspot.com/2011/12/well-i-guess-thatll-teach-me.html
Saturday, December 17, 2011. Well, I Guess That'll Teach Me. Same coffee shop: I've received five phone calls since I've been here, and each time, I've walked to a spot where my voice wouldn't disturb other patrons. Meanwhile, Loudy-in-the-corner has not received any calls. . . . Until just this moment when his very loud ringer started ringing . . . oh crap. But my man carried his phone to my nondisturbing spot in another part of the coffee shop and took the call. December 19, 2011 at 7:12 PM.

Write from Scratch: Found Lessons
http://writefromscratch.blogspot.com/2012/02/found-lessons.html
Wednesday, February 29, 2012. There's no bad place to (re)learn a lesson about writing. The best thing I've learned today about writing came to me from a book about the early days of the oil industry. Petrolia. Published by Brian Black in 2000, is a ruminative, often poetic, examination of 19th Northwest Pennsylvania. I thought I was reading the book to research historical events which are the basis for my own historical novel: Pithole: The Wickedest City. Today, I found this passage:. How about a West V...

Write from Scratch: Why Writing Is Impossible: A Quiet Diatribe Concerning the Craft Delivered in the Form of an Innocuous Series of Blog Posts

Thursday, January 26, 2012. Why Writing Is Impossible: A Quiet Diatribe Concerning the Craft Delivered in the Form of an Innocuous Series of Blog Posts. Consider the paragraph, for instance. Francine Prose writes a twenty-two page lyrical, informative, passionate, impassioned, telling, showing, fun, descriptive discussion of the paragraph in her book Reading Like a Writer. In the chapter, title "Paragraphs" (Oh! I'm rereading the chapter right now, thinking about how I will begin a conversation about par...

Why We're Such Awesome Parents, Who Rock. In response to your first question, "Jackson, where have you been? Let me say this: when the baby gets the twenty-four hour flu, daddy gets to have the flu for the whole week. In response to question 2a, "Jackson, does it hurt when you drill through the board into the finger holding the board? I have to say, "Yes. Yes it does hurt.".
