Indonesia | Economics: The fatal misconception of population control
http://abgaduh.blogspot.com/2009/01/fatal-misconception-of-population.html
Sunday, January 04, 2009. The fatal misconception of population control. For the holiday, I decided to finish Michael Connelly's Fatal Misconception: The Struggle to Control World Population. It's an excellent history of how a hypothesis - that unchecked, population growth will result in all sorts of problems - became an ideology that got translated into policies and spun out of control to ruin many lives of women, mostly in developing countries. From the book's concluding chapter:. I come from Indonesia...

Indonesia | Economics: Clive Crook on the crisis and innovation
http://abgaduh.blogspot.com/2008/10/clive-crook-on-crisis-and-innovation.html
Sunday, October 19, 2008. Clive Crook on the crisis and innovation. Growth economists will tell you that the key to long term growth is productivity improvement, driven by technical changes and innovations. Economic history suggests that technical changes create boom-and-bust cycles as people adapt to the new technology. One can say that the crisis is a consequence of technical changes and innovations. So, what of the present crisis? FT's Clive Crook on the crisis' impact on the regulatory regime. This w...

Indonesia | Economics: On the economics of superstition
http://abgaduh.blogspot.com/2008/10/on-economics-of-superstition.html
Wednesday, October 01, 2008. On the economics of superstition. As part of my economic history class, I was required to do readings (with no symbols and very little graphs). Here is an interesting one, by Vernon Smith, Nobel Laureate in economics. He was talking about the economic principles in the emergence of humankind. And he has the following to say about superstition:. Posted by Arya Gaduh at 8:01 am. This is fascinating. Can you tell me what publication this was sourced from? Nice insight. Thanks.

Wednesday, October 01, 2008. The utility of math. David Colander, reviewing this book. Which, I think, explains why it's much easier to do good economics than other social sciences. Posted by Arya Gaduh at 7:24 am. At 10/13/2008 02:59:00 am. Can you elaborate what you mean by problems of substance and semantics? Are these problems unique to economics? At 10/13/2008 12:02:00 pm. At 10/13/2008 01:44:00 pm. The reason it's harder for social sciences, I think, is because:. A) we are very limited in terms of ...

Indonesia | Economics: Roger Ebert: The rational film critic
http://abgaduh.blogspot.com/2008/10/roger-ebert-rational-film-critic.html
Wednesday, October 29, 2008. Roger Ebert: The rational film critic. Top film critic Roger Ebert understands the necessity of transitivity (and completeness) that makes up a rational preference. If one week you state, "'Mr. Untouchable' makes 'American Gangster' look like a fairy tale," and the next week we say, "American Gangster" was "Goodfellas" for "the next generation," then you must conclude that "Mr. Untouchable" is better than "Goodfellas.". See the rest of Ebert's critiquing rule book here. Centr...

Indonesia | Economics: Soccer and social capital
http://abgaduh.blogspot.com/2010/01/soccer-and-social-capital.html
Saturday, January 02, 2010. Soccer and social capital. So, this winter break, I packed up five books on my vacation and managed to finish (at least) two: Soccernomics. And Unanticipated Gains: Origins of Network Inequality in Everyday Life. Both books are very rewarding at different levels. Calls it "a sort of Freakonomics. For soccer". Well, not exactly. In many ways, it is superior than the book it's compared to. For one, Soccernomics. Lacks the kind of attention-deficit disorder plaguing Freakonomics.

Tuesday, August 29, 2006. Off the shelf: Economic history and development. Yes, I know. I promised the second part of this post. This week, but I haven't gotten around to finishing it. Meanwhile, nothing of interest on the policy front (oh, except this neverending debate on rice import policy. But I've brushed on it here. And if that's still not enough, there are more here. So instead, let me share with you some books on economic history and development from my bookshelf. Links to Amazon are provided.

Indonesia | Economics: Being a liberal
http://abgaduh.blogspot.com/2006/06/being-liberal.html
Wednesday, June 28, 2006. Notice that I qualify such liberalism as a modern American one represented in the United States (US) by the Democratic Party. It’s a rather different animal than the kind proposed by 18th century philosophers, notably J.S. Mills, who emphasise protection for individual rights (including the rights to property and trade) from the power of the state. This kind of liberalism is often associated with the Republican Party. Guess what: I am also. Kind of a liberal. Which considered it...
