We did it for the Chooks!: White stuff!
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2015/07/white-stuff.html
We did it for the Chooks! Monday, July 13, 2015. The most amazing hail storm hovered over us on Saturday. It could have been snow, but it would have hurt to stand under it for sure - given the noise on the tin roof. The hail went in to the gutters, down the pipes and clogged-up the inlet for the water tank. It gushed out all down the side, and this pile of ice even hung around through the next day as well. The hugel bed was drenched, but it held the water from running down the hill. Perfect! It's been ra...

We did it for the Chooks!: August 2015
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
We did it for the Chooks! Sunday, August 23, 2015. The hugel bed is growing nicely with all the rain. The asparagus plants are poking their heads up asking "Is it Spring yet? The almond trees certainly know it's warming up. They're blooming like crazy and look really happy after the permie group pruned them. The bees are humming away up there happily, and the old flowering broccoli is yesterdays news. Don't forget, you can click on the pictures to get a bigger view. :). Tuesday, August 18, 2015. It's nea...

We did it for the Chooks!: Tree planting at home
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2015/08/tree-planting-at-home.html
We did it for the Chooks! Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Tree planting at home. The other day, we went to a clearing sale that was a bit of a bust, then the next day we went to a poultry auction, which was also a bust. I think something is telling us we should just stay home! So, on the way back we stopped in to the nursery and brought home 12 tubestock trees. Today we got stuck into planting them all. It's much more productive staying at home. :). Lipstick for Goats: Goat woman evicts TV star from caravan
http://lipstickforgoats.blogspot.com/2015/08/goat-woman-evicts-tv-star-from-caravan.html
Tuesday, 4 August 2015. Goat woman evicts TV star from caravan. Those who thought they knew me laughed when they saw the ramshackle state of the farm house and the fact it is off grid, singing the theme from the late 1960’s TV sitcom “Green Acres” to me. If you aren’t aware of what I’m referring to, do yourself a favour, Google “Green Acres” or YouTube the opening theme, it sums up the story rather well. The caravan was our home for 3 years while we slowly fixed up the vandalised house. For awhile living...

We did it for the Chooks!: August 2013
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
We did it for the Chooks! Sunday, August 11, 2013. We left fairly early in the morning, but despite that, we still arrived in the dark on Wednesday. First order of business is to light some candles and see if everything is as we left it. That shot is of inside the kitchen. There isn't any heating yet either, or the first order of business might have been to light a fire! You can see on the left there is our freezer / fridge. It's a 12v DC one! The only other thing we wanted to do on Thursday was set up t...

We did it for the Chooks!: October 2014
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
We did it for the Chooks! Monday, October 27, 2014. October is nearly over and generally it's considered Spring - at least everywhere else we've lived for quite some time. Here, it is feeling like instant Summer. Sure, there were a few days when we put the scarves and hats back on, but otherwise it's been around 30 degrees! Almost nothing in between. I'm not entirely sure if it's considered normal or not! Made some changes to the design - but only in our heads at this stage. Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

We did it for the Chooks!: July 2015
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
We did it for the Chooks! Wednesday, July 15, 2015. DIY Extra Low Voltage solar power. We've been working on getting electricity happening here for a long time now. Lots of research, lots of learning, determining exactly how much we need and finding the components. It's been a learning experience, for sure, coming from not knowing what amps, volts or watts were, knowing nothing about electricity at all, really! Building the battery box feels like nearing the end of the journey, rather than just the start.

We did it for the Chooks!: December 2014
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
We did it for the Chooks! Monday, December 8, 2014. From Water to Wood Storage. Our old water tank has a new lease on life as a wood shed. It's very comforting to know that we're all set for wood to keep us warm this winter. The first half of the water tank was filled up with wood, most recently from a $35 bid at a clearing sale, and now we're cleaning up the area around the house so we've got a bit more to store. On goes the second half of the old water tank! Sunday, December 7, 2014. High 4 on the A414.

We did it for the Chooks!: February 2015
http://forthechooks.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
We did it for the Chooks! Tuesday, February 10, 2015. Hi all, we've decided to learn some welding and the first project to tackle was making a new aviary for our 2 little grass parrots. Pip and Squeek. Our welding lessons so far have been:. Use an inverter welder when welding with a generator. Welding thin metals is difficult (we bought square tube steel only 1.5m thick). Play around with welding rod size and amps until you no longer set things on fire. Heres hoping they move in soon! Tanks for the ride.
