Eating Local in Memphis

Eating Local in Memphis. Saturday, May 12, 2012. For a time while I was a child, my family lived in Macon, GA, and that place, more than any place I've lived since coming to Memphis, defined what I feel when I think of "hot summer nights." It was sticky and humid and gross and there were mosquitoes and we were outside all the freaking time. 1 9" baked pastry shell or crumb crust (I used a simple graham cracker crust recipe. 1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries, partially thawed, and sliced. 1 Tbsp lemon juice.

Eating Local in Memphis. Friday, November 18, 2011. Snapshots from the Memphis Farmers Market Harvest Celebration 2011. The only-a-couple-weeks-overdue Memphis Farmers Market Harvest Celebration post! Check out last year's here. The HC is one of the best parts about being an MFM volunteer, and I look forward all season to seeing people, eating delicious food from some of the best restaurants in town, and supporting the market. My post at the check-in table. Started drinking before the guests arrived.

Eating Local in Memphis: Kale and White Bean Soup

http://eatinglocalinmemphis.blogspot.com/2011/10/kale-and-white-bean-soup.html

Eating Local in Memphis. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Kale and White Bean Soup. Welcome back, o kale! While you've not exactly been absent from the market until now, it really isn't until the first cold snaps hit that I crave your deeply-flavored leaves. Ok, no more apostrophe; it's starting to feel a little contrived. Here I used onions from Ly Vu Produce, red potatoes from Bennett-Burke Nurseries, and kale from Whitton Farms. The recipe made enough for three meals for me. Kale and White Bean Soup.

Eating Local in Memphis: Southwestern Roasted Sweet Potato, Corn, and Black Bean Salad

http://eatinglocalinmemphis.blogspot.com/2010/10/southwestern-roasted-sweet-potato-corn.html

Eating Local in Memphis. Saturday, October 30, 2010. Southwestern Roasted Sweet Potato, Corn, and Black Bean Salad. Lazy [Saturday], wake up in the late afternoon. Sorry, does that ever get old? And Mike Castle, basically not the most creative costumes there, but I had great fun doing a conservative-lady clownface on myself. The recipe is adapted from a Mark Bittman recipe from last fall. I omitted the onion and red bell pepper he calls for and added roasted corn instead. About one tablespoon more olive ...

Eating Local in Memphis: Sweet Potato and Caramelized Onion Gratin

http://eatinglocalinmemphis.blogspot.com/2011/11/sweet-potato-and-caramelized-onion.html

Eating Local in Memphis. Friday, November 18, 2011. Sweet Potato and Caramelized Onion Gratin. Or, Winter 2011: Era of the Sweet Potato. Because I maybe bought 25.5 pounds of them from Dodson Farms at the Tsunami Winter Market last weekend (hey, at $12 for the box, that worked out to 47 cents/lb, which was better than the 98 cents Kroger was offering at the time. sometimes local can be cheaper, especially with respect to in-season vegetables). Sweet Potato and Caramelized Onion Gratin. 1 tablespoon unsal...

http://eatinglocalinmemphis.blogspot.com/2009/06/use-it-or-lose-it-challenge-sweet.html

Eating Local in Memphis. Friday, June 26, 2009. Use it Or Lose It Challenge: Sweet Potato and Herb Dumplings. Alien tentacles greeting me as I reached past the bag of sweet potatoes hanging in my pantry:. The plan switched to reaching into the bag to make a quick rescue.  But, broken off, the shoots are very pretty:. This recipe uses sweets from the nice folks at Dodson Farms and Van Cheeseman's hen and duck eggs.  Check it out:. Bet you can't guess which one came from a duck. About 1/2 lb (two large?

Traditional Thai food

There is no shortage of restaurants and vendors offering traditional Thai food in Kanchanaburi but when it comes more cosmopolitan dishes it gets a little complicated. And eating local involves more than just pointing in the direction of kitchens offering visitors a taste of traditional Thai cooking. It is knowing where to find those little eateries no one else knows about. Knowing where you can get the best steak in Kanchanaburi for example. Not a traditional Thai meal. But what is traditional?

Eating Local in Phoenix

Eating Local in Phoenix. And in the end. A year-and-a-half ago I started this blog. It was to be an experiment. Could a grad student make one meal a week from all local ingredients? The answer, it turns out is yes. (As long as you take the term “meal” lightly.). Now, I’m 11 days from graduation and I’ll no longer be a poor grad student. I’ll be a poor, recently-graduated student. There’s a difference, I’m sure. It’s funny to look back at that first post. It became about marmalade. And giant sweet potatoes.
