Summer, sand and sandwiches. As i sit down to write this post, my mind rushes back to those first, early fall days of school. sitting at my desk, hands folded and donning a new dress (. What a little lady. Expertly chosen by my mother, i’d hang on every word uttered by my adored teachers. then, at their direction and this was my favorite part i’d choose a shiny new, razor-sharp #2 pencil and begin to craft my annual essay about how i spent my summer vacation. An older me, sis at the Cape. In my mind, i s...
little bird flies home |

Little bird flies home. Witty hip. smart. generous. warm. as glamorous as any movie star of her era. my mom was the mom other kids wanted to have. on school field trips, at Brownie meetings and at birthday parties, my friends flocked around her, jockeying to be in the position of holding her hand. a shy kid, i hung back and observed as she split her attention between her many admirers. Um, i might have been a little jealous. A child with spindly legs and a petite appetite, my grandfather nicknamed her.

When i was in high school, my dad and i acted out the same scene from our family play nearly every Friday night. he’d be sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper. i’d walk in and put my hand on his shoulder. Hey, dad. mom’s gonna be home in about an hour. what do you want to do for dinner? Any other day of the week, he’d already have something simmering on the stove. but not on Friday. dad would look up at me over his reading glasses and say, as if it were an epiphany,. How about getting a pizza.

Yesterday afternoon, i sat down in front of one of those Hallmark channel. Don’t judge me. The plot: expected. but unexpectedly, laugh-out-loud funny. i looked over at your photo, perched in its prominent place on the credenza, and knew how much you would have loved watching it with me. I can’t tell you how i miss those moments. Or not, because i’m a sap. Because you just may have forgotten you’ve come to adore them. Today, like every day, little bird, i remember you. and even though you’re not sitti...

She’d rather snatch a little nap before dinner, instead of gnawing on some rubbery-tasting toy. but who wouldn’t? Many happy returns of the day, pumpkin! simply little bird |
https://littlebirdbaking.com/2013/02/04/simply-little-bird
It was with that kind of simplicity in mind that i went about to create mom’s birthday tribute dinner. I began with her childhood favorite, lamb rib chops. on the occasions i had the privilege to make them for her, our little bird. Would daintily pick up a diminutive broiled chop and eat every bit until only the bone remained. she’d then look up and grin that signature grin of pure satisfaction. no lamb in my experience has been as tender and buttery as the Sea Breeze Farm. Again, i grilled the asparagus).

Eat Play. Work. Love. The mundane adventures of a nerdy Catholic family. August 1, 2015. When I was pregnant with Matt, our oldest, we decided not to find out if he was a boy or a girl until his birth. We kind of suspected that he was a boy because at one of our ultrasound appointments, the technician remarked to the doctor, “They don’t want to find out the sex. But WE know, don’t we? 8221; The next thing she asked me was, “What’s the baby’s name? 8221; were joyful words we were blessed to hear, before.
Eating Smaller
Chronicles of a Melbourne foodie seeking interesting, small meals after gastric sleeve surgery. Sunday, 29 September 2013. My Asian Excursion Weekend. Is predominantly Vietnamese but there is also a Thai zone at the western end and there's a huge pan-Asian supermarket opposite the Woolworths and Aldi centre. It's pretty good to have such an authentic destination so close by, but this is one of the only times I have done my full shop here. It won't be the last. I've made steamed cod with black beans and s...

Eating Small Things
Monday, June 29, 2015. My company still manages to be a challenge. My air conditioner broke down recently, and the average temperature here is 43°C. Only by asking the university to help did the air conditioner get fixed. It’s like the communal nature of my students – it’s hard to get them not to cheat, but to them it’s collaboration, not cheating, and nothing could be more alien to them than not helping a member of their group. How is that not a beautiful thing? They act like they’re in London and...

Eating Smart
Think before you eat. Thursday, August 1, 2013. I love pancakes. I can eat them any time of day. There is something so comforting and satisfying about them. I wish I could take credit for these pancakes, but alas, I cannot. I got the recipe from Vegetarian Times. 2013 issue, courtesy of Mary Shore. The recipe won first place in the Reader Recipe contest. First place? They sound oatmeally and gummy. I had to try them to discover what qualifies as first place. Well good golly, they're delicious! I'm practi...
