Ed Drewitt: January 2011
http://eddrewitt.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Naturalist, writer and broadcaster. Monday, 31 January 2011. Packing for my next wildlife tour. While topping up my bird feeder this morning some redwings were calling in the nearby trees - hopefully they nipped down to peck on the apples I'd just put out (before the jackdaws flew away with them! Sunday, 30 January 2011. The Big Garden Birdwatch. As expected, some birds I've seen recently such as coal tits and dunnocks didn't make an appearance. However, over the hour we finally concluded that at lea...
Ed Drewitt: December 2010
http://eddrewitt.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Naturalist, writer and broadcaster. Thursday, 23 December 2010. A real treat today - as I was writing an e-mail I spotted a starling-sized bird with a crest in the sycamore tree. I instantly knew it was a waxwing. It swooped down out of view and I later realised there's a shrub full of rose-hips where it must have been feeding! What an awesome garden tick! Combined with a male brambling yesterday and all five species of winter thrush this week I'm not doing too badly! Tuesday, 7 December 2010. The garden...
Ed Drewitt: April 2012
http://eddrewitt.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Naturalist, writer and broadcaster. Monday, 16 April 2012. A thrilling wildlife moment - redstart. I had one of those truly thrilling wildlife moments yesterday - it's very personal and relates to redstarts, a relative of the robin which have just arrived in the UK from West Africa. They are stunning birds and at Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve. There were less migrants around but from our ringing site we were watching a female and the odd male redstart fly-catching in the nearby scrub. And here it is!

Naturalist, writer and broadcaster. Saturday, 5 April 2014. The three chicks hatched today. I love being a bird ringer. Someone who safely catches birds and puts identification rings on their legs so we can follow them later in life. It gives you the chance to really see birds up close and have an intimate insight into their lives. The four beautiful eggs a week ago. I think they have only just hatched and over the next week I will follow their development. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ed is a fre...

Craig Birding: June 2014
http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Friday, 27 June 2014. Listen to the Sedgies. For a long time I've wanted to post about this, and now with a little time, I hope I can enthuse you all to really listen to songs and decipher what's really going on. Sedge Warbler - Acrocephalus. Sedge warbler are a pretty common bird in Northern Europe, often heard and seldom seen well these beautiful sub-Saharan migrants certainly have a song which packs a punch, but what makes their songs so interesting? So, my advice, rather than spend hours inside this ...
Craig Birding: August 2013
http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Friday, 30 August 2013. 2013 has been a relatively slow year, ringing wise. I've ringed little of interest and therefore haven't updated the blog. Now however, I'm back in Gedser, Denmark; where I have now work for a few weeks. I'll return home shortly and attend University (Nottingham Trent) in late September. We've ringed a couple of thousand birds throughout August. Mainly warblers, Reed, Marsh,Willow,Wood, Garden and Icterine. Also Blackcap, White and Lesser Whitethroat also help make the bulk. Birde...

Saturday, 16 June 2012. We're still quite busy with all things survey at the moment as all the spring work comes into it's crucial final stages. Ortolan Buntings are feeding youngsters, which is great news, we ringed a brood of 4 chicks last week and they luckily fledged hours before the farmer cut his grass. I was horrified to wake up to see the farmer had mown in the night. See below the open-topped nest remains. Ortolan Bunting after mowing, a sorry scene. Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus. Craig Birding: February 2012
http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Monday, 27 February 2012. As the week draws to a close I reflect on what has been 'one to remember'. The title of this post refers to not only the amount of new birds caught this week but also a coming of age. My 21st Birthday was mid-week with a party at the weekend therefore reasonably little effort was put in to ringing. Various outings with Heather and one with Ciaran yielded a mixed bag species wise. 1st - 8 Blue Tit. 2nd - 3 Herring Gull. 3rd - 2 Black-Headed Gull. Posted by Heather Naomi McGinty.

Craig Birding: Langford Spoonbill
http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2014/05/langford-spoonbill.html
Wednesday, 7 May 2014. On Sunday 4th May, me and Rob decided we'd have a proper look around RSPB's newest reserve - Langford Lowfields. Rob has been volunteering at the site through the autumn and spring and I must say I do envy him, it's quite a site. Below are a couple of shots from myself and Rob of the Langford bird, followed by a brief look at aging second and third calendar year birds against adults. 2nd Calendar year Spoonbill -. 2nd Calendar year Spoonbill - Platalea leucorodia. Craig Birding: April 2012
http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Friday, 27 April 2012. With spring late to arrive here in Central Sweden it's been a slow couple of weeks bird wise. The main work at the moment comprises of wetland surveys and Starling nest box checks. The wetland surveys however are very enjoyable and there's always the hint of mystery at what might turn up? Hopefully it'll either jump into a net on it's own soon, or I'll set up the big nets and annoy it until it's caught. Thursday, 19 April 2012. So enough of that. Other decent birds this week: 3...
Craig Birding: December 2011
http://craigbirding.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, 15 December 2011. After a hectic rush of e-mails back in April I finally received confirmation that I was to be heading out to Sweden to work for 5 months; my role entitled Bird Surveyor/Head Bird Ringer. In all honesty I was a little pessimistic about this, maybe I was running before I could walk? However, 10 days after receiving confirmation I was on a flight and Stockholm bound. Yellow Wagtail was a nice result. By June the 22nd I had cleared/re-built or created all of the net rides at 3 mai...
