A few summers back I did a short solo backpacking trip into the Gore Range of Colorado to a place called Salmon Lakes. I got lucky and caught a beautiful sunset while I was there. In the morning I woke up to a gorgeous blue sky and a glassy alpine lake offering up a mirror image reflection of the scene. It was glorious. This entry was posted in Colorado. Baker Ski Area at 9,131 feet above sea level. One of the very cool things about the Cascade mountains is the sheer vertical rise, going from near sea level to high altitude in a very short distance. I only made him stop for pictures once. The C&O Canal is a great recreational asset in the DC area, and you can cover some serious ground and pretty quickly forget you are outside of the nations capital. A couple of Stats:. Number of miles: 36.3. Number of beavers spotted: 1. Great blue herons: 5. C and O Canal.
