Tales From Lecale: August 2009
http://talesfromlecale.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 26 August 2009. Tales from Iraq and Palestine. Further to my post below about the SSU Congress in Sweden I felt the need to dedicate a separate posting for my meeting with delegates from the Kurdistan Youth Freedom Organisation from Iraq and the Palestinian-based Fatah Youth movement. The peace-process here has had its difficulties but we have learned that the only through partnership and working together can we ever resolve our issues - now we resolve our disputes at the political table and n...

Wednesday, 18 February 2009. EU Commission warns DARD their distribution of the Farm Modernisation Scheme may have breached EU rules. Following on from my previous post, it appears that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) may soon find themselves in further difficulties over the recent Farm Modernisation Scheme debacle. It has had a major demoralising impact on the local agricultural sector with many farmers complaining that they felt demeaned, humiliated and like beggars. Due to t...

Tales From Lecale: Meet the New Boss; Same as the Old Boss
http://talesfromlecale.blogspot.com/2010/04/meet-new-boss-same-as-old-boss.html
Sunday, 25 April 2010. Meet the New Boss; Same as the Old Boss. Last week I like many of you sat down to watch the much anticipated second instalment in a series of three Leaders Debates prior to the forthcoming UK General Election. The quality of debate was extremely high, and expectedly so, and this was due as much to the standard of questions posed by audience members as it was the standard of candidates. So what would your life be like when you are 80? Ironically, we will probably look back on these ...

Tuesday, 24 March 2009. Why Won’t The Sammy Show Just Go Off Air? Today in the Assembly Environment Minister Sammy Wilson attempted to defend his ridiculous decision to ban UK Government-backed ads urging people to be more energy efficient. The Minister was responding to an Assembly motion of concern over his recent position. Wilson is single-handedly is making a mockery of the role of a Minister of Government and he is turning NI into a laughing stock. But the Minister was missing the point. As I have p...

Esoterica NI: Education blog seeks new debate
http://esotericani.blogspot.com/2009/02/education-blog-seeks-new-debate.html
Notes from an avid follower of Northern Irish politics. Friday, 6 February 2009. Education blog seeks new debate. Seeking to create debate around the future of education in Northern Ireland has been created. As well as listing the grammar schools preparing to set their own exams it has a poll on whether Education Minister Caitríona Ruane should resign. I wonder if Ms Ruane has checked in and voted yet? Some of course would argue that the current deadlock is the DUP's fault and not SF's.

Friday, 5 February 2010. A Young Swedish Social Democrat In Northern Ireland. Matthew booked up several very interesting sessions for me, and I was overwhelmed by the hospitality and the welcome I received from everyone in the SDLP. Matthew managed to arrange a meeting with Margaret Ritchie, which I appreciated very huge, and I really believe in the political line she runs and thinks she is a very good representative for the Social Democrats and the SDLP. Regionombudsman, SSU Stockholm.

Esoterica NI: January 2009
http://esotericani.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Notes from an avid follower of Northern Irish politics. Saturday, 24 January 2009. The conventional narrative is that the DUP and Sinn Féin are the two political parties inexorably on the rise in NI politics. This is why they arguably are not. But, both the DUP and Sinn Féin have no other alternative coalition partners apart from each other. Their very extremism leaves them only with each other. Hence the opportunity for the centre ground - where a strategy developed on meaningful engagement and ...For t...

Wednesday, 13 January 2010. Ireland to Gaza - Viva Palestina! This is a moving report by John Hurson, a leading member of the Irish delegation that took part in the recent Viva Palestina aid convoy to Gaza, Palestine. To view John's photos from the trip. The following day in Amman, thousands showed up for a rally in honour of the convoy. There were a few hours of speeches, as each speech had to be translated into 3 languages each time someone spoke! At this point, the Turkish Prime Minister got involved ...

Thursday, 10 December 2009. Climate) Change That We Can Believe In? World leaders are currently meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark to discuss climate change and to negotiate a climate deal to coincide with the expiration of the current Kyoto Protocol framework in 2012. The purpose of these preliminary discussions, or “talks about talks”, was to smooth out several issues, including ensuring US participation in the process. This participation was absent from Kyoto. The key to the success of this week’s C...
