Loving the leftovers – mincemeat cake | edwardiangrandmabakes
https://edwardiangrandmabakes.wordpress.com/2014/01/28/loving-the-leftovers-mincemeat-cake
Recipes from my Edwardian grandma's notebook. Loving the leftovers – mincemeat cake. Asymp; 1 Comment. Edwardian Grandma and her friends were of the ‘waste not, want not’ generation. They had lived through two world wars and knew that every scrap of food had to be used to feed the family. So not granny’s cake, but in the spirit of her recipe book of friends’ favourites, here is Jane’s simple, but delicious fruit cake made with mincemeat. 4 oz caster sugar. 7 oz self raising flour. Bake at 325F, 160c or g...

Live Local Greens: Crunchy winter slaw with apple and golden beetroot
http://eatlivelovelocalgreens.blogspot.com/2014/01/crunchy-winter-slaw-with-apple-and.html
Cooking and eating tasty, vegetarian, local, organic food. Thursday, 23 January 2014. Crunchy winter slaw with apple and golden beetroot. I can't believe we're half way through January already! So how are everyone's New Year's resolutions going? No, me neither. My New Year's resolutions were to do more exercise and the the stupidly vague "do more" - I want to get out and see more of London and go to more events etc. So far, I have yet to even put my trainers on, and I've been to the cinema a few times.
Parrot tulips are gorgeous…but which variety? | Freshly made, every day
https://freshlymadeeveryday.com/2012/04/15/parrot-tulips-are-gorgeousbut-which-variety
Freshly made, every day. Ideas for what to eat, cook and do. Parrot tulips are gorgeousbut which variety? April 15, 2012. Middot; by marygodfrey. Middot; in Cakes. Middot; Leave a comment. Yesterday I bought this stunning bouquet of parrot tulips. The flowers start out as tightly closed green buds, but as the buds open something magical happens. The tips of the petals start to transform themselves from green to clear bright yellow and then to brilliant scarlet. Follow Blog via Email. I have spent my life...

Freshly made, every day. Ideas for what to eat, cook and do. Cheddar and caraway cheese straws. March 1, 2012. Middot; by marygodfrey. Middot; in canapes. Middot; 1 Comment. You may think that life’s too short to make cheese straws, and most of the time I would agree with you. But last weekend I was compiling a menu for a dinner with friends and came across this recipe in the Ottolenghi Cookbook, currently my favourite source of ideas. 300g ready rolled puff pasty. 1 egg, lightly beaten. Preheat the oven...

Freshly made, every day. Ideas for what to eat, cook and do. Mozzarella and tomato salad with pesto dressing. May 12, 2012. Middot; by marygodfrey. Middot; in Salads. Middot; 1 Comment. After days of constant rain and grey skies, we woke up to sunshine this morning. By mid afternoon it was positively hot in one corner of the garden so I thought I’d risk serving a late lunch outside. Salad flavours taste so much better when eaten outdoors with the sun on your back. Follow Blog via Email. An Edwardian Gran...

We’d already eaten a platter of mozzarella, olives, huge sweet tomatoes, salty anchovies, rocket and ciabatta, but we were enticed by the waiter to have these with our coffee. Follow Blog via Email. Freshly made, every day. Ideas for what to eat, cook and do. My ultimate Ligurian Fish Stew. March 4, 2012. Middot; by marygodfrey. Middot; in Dinner. Middot; 1 Comment. We all have a special recipe that we’ve cooked time and time again over many years, tweaking and adjusting until it finally reaches that point of perfection when it becomes one of your ‘signature’ dishes; one that family and friends beg you to cook for them. This is one of mine. 250g or so of small potatoes halved lengthways. 12 large pr...

Freshly made, every day. Ideas for what to eat, cook and do. A sunny day for Summer Leaves. March 11, 2012. Middot; by marygodfrey. Middot; in menu. Middot; Leave a comment. My goodness wasn’t it a gorgeous day today? The sky was clear blue as far as the eye could see, and it was hot! Just throw an assortment of salad leaves into a pretty bowl. Add black olives, preferably the ones in olive oil rather than the Greek ones. In a small bowl put some chopped fresh marjoram leaves, a finely chopped clove of g...

Bean an Tighe: Restoring an Edwardian Home and Garden
Bean an Tighe: Restoring an Edwardian Home and Garden. A DEATH IN THE FAMILY. Saturday, August 30, 2014. A DEATH IN THE FAMILY. It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of the great oak at the southeast corner of Comstock House. RIGHT: The oak in its winter glory, February, 2010). It was as fine a Valley Oak as seen anywhere, its majestic canopy three stories high and seemingly sculpted to perfection. A landscape painter might say it was even too. There was no doubt the tree was badly injured&#...
