Trotz seines eher unscheinbaren Gefieders ist der kleine Vogel mit der lauten Stimme bei Groß und Klein sehr beliebt. Der Zaunkönig singt fast das ganze Jahr über. Er baut ein kugelförmiges Nest aus grünem Moos, dürren Blättern und Fasern. Es hat einen seitlichen Eingang und steht in Reisighaufen, Efeuwänden, Wurzelstöcken, Mauerlöchern und unter Dächern.
