living my life one city at a time

Living my life one city at a time. Sunday, September 11, 2011. Thank you to those of you who are able to express sadness and loss on this day, without oppressing others in turn. This day is sad in so many ways, but my heart aches the most for the hate that has too often replaced authentic grief. I am devastated by how many of today's newscasts, headlines, and status updates contain racism, islamophobia, and hateful nationalism. This is where my mind is today: 1700% Project: Mistaken for Muslim. I start t...

Living my life one city at a time. Thursday, March 12, 2009. Wow there is so much going on in my life right now, and it is pretty much amazing. Since my last post, Asher Moody PROPOSED to me and we are now engaged! Also since my last post, i auditioned (eek! So if you find yourself in the south bay during Easter weekend, come check out a show about vaginas! And sexuality, and esteem, and violence against women, and abuse, and empowerment, and.) Proceeds go to local non-profit orgs working to end viol...

Living my life one city at a time. Monday, January 25, 2010. A fellow activist and SJSU graduate was murdered this weekend. San Jose: Victim in fatal shooting was SJSU grad, aspired to be lawyer. Here is my comment from the article in the Mercury News. some of the other comments were sad but not surprising responses to his murder. We have a lot of work to do, people. living my life one city at a time: July 2009

http://www.elaineinthebay.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Living my life one city at a time. Thursday, July 30, 2009. We bought a little tiny adorable car from our friend cassie. After sitting around for quite some time, and before we changed the oil, this little fellow clocked in at 32 miles per gallon! That's twice what the truck gets. (don't worry truck, we still love you). Basically, it will pay for itself in gas money in no time. plus, we don't feel as bad about the environment every time we decide to drive somewhere. hooray! Matt and Becca: April 2011

http://mattandbecca.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Friday, April 29, 2011. But Roy's deserves its own post. You're seriously going on a date- without any children? There was lobster inside these succulent little beauts. This tasted like the platonic fish. And the platonic rare ahi steak and platonic lamb chop. Happy anniversary to us! Big Ole Pile O' Random. Recent random goodness, sorry, I don't have the attention span to string together a coherent story arch. Arc. Ark. Ack! Mmm, lepto rocks! MP signing, "baby".

http://mattandbecca.blogspot.com/2014/01/new-adventures-old-place.html

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Thursday, January 02, 2014. New Adventures, Old Place. I've got a big New Years resolution this year. I'm scared, but optimistic. But a little background. The term is Island Fever. I got the fever. I got it bad. But I realize, looking out of my front door at seventeen waterfalls after a thunderstorm on Waialeale, or being overwhelmed with citrus and star fruit from our farm, that the grass is not greener. The grass is the greenest, right here. Literally. So I ne...

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Thursday, June 30, 2011. Happy Father's Day and More Family Delight. It's summer here in Kauai, which means even more beautiful light, early sunshine and late warm evenings. Walking through the Banyan tree to the beach. Even cowboys hit the beach. My car has hit that point of bussup-ed-ness that I can start patching it together with oversimplified philisophical statements! And shop at Walmart - "Buy Local! Maybe stop at Starbucks with my "RULDS2.".

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Monday, July 18, 2011. Way too many pictures. This post really deserves to be about five small ones, but I don't have the patience for that. Theoretical post one: Fishing Day. Since we are on Kauai, there was naturally a drumming circle on the bike path near the beach. We had to go check it out and dance around. Rosie brought her own fishing pole, too. Girls in tide pools. Theoretical Post 2: North Shore Fieldtrip Day. Theoretical post number 3: Beaches are nice.

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Saturday, June 30, 2012. Winter in Utah: It's Gorgeous. I had forgotten that Utah is breathtakingly beautiful. And it is populated with fuzzy little woodland creatures! The highway often smelled of SKUNK! Winter in Utah: Family. Luckily for me, Matt's ideal program is in the state where my pioneer rutts run deep. By the crick. So I got to see a lot of family and it was really wonderful. Winter in Utah: Daily Life. http://mattandbecca.blogspot.com/2014/01/derring-do.html

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Sunday, January 19, 2014. I'm a fairly timid person. It may seem weird to say that since I spend lots of my time talking in front of people- even TEENAGE people- with no trepidation. But that is because I am solely talking about subjects that I know very very well- reading and writing and learning new ideas- all that is as easy and reflexive as breathing in an out. This is partly a natural byproduct of the ossification of aging. I'm a dinosaur at 33- I know ...

Matt and Becca: August 2011

http://mattandbecca.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Tuesday, August 23, 2011. The Big Trip Part 2: Boothbay, Maine. We went to the Aquarium of Maine. It was the Deliciousness Museum, clearly funded by lobstermen of Maine. mmm, made us hungry. Why does Maine, a cold place, have so much good ice cream? Auntie Annie taught RJ how to sew, and they created an apron together. I also snuck and made a frock for Barbie- Rosie was irate that it impeded her flexiness, but I sewed it on forever. I love this significant glance.

He mau moʻolelo no kekahi ʻōhana malihini. Tuesday, December 31, 2013. This is Why My Daughter is a Better Artist Than Me. So at the library a few weeks ago, we found a stack of drawing books. RJ has taken to sleeping on them, her little body wedged between stacks of sketchbooks, boxes of pencils, and anime how-tos. One of the books is a real art course, called Art for Kids. By Kathryn Temple. It reminds me of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I thought, "this works! It's a foolproof plan! RJ got o...

Tuesday, 21 February 2012. Happy Birthday to Me. And the King of Norway Harald V. Posted by Elaine, Jarle and Mia. We had a lovely weekend in Bergen staying at the Clarion Admiral hotel right on the wharf (see picture of view from our room) celebrating Erling's 75th birthday (Jarle's Dad). The weather was rainy then snowy but we didn't mind as we spent most of our time enjoying good food and good company at the hotel. Posted by Elaine, Jarle and Mia. Tuesday, 20 December 2011. Twenty-something biologist and aspiring Peace Corps Volunteer. I was minding my own business, taking a bucket shower in my room when my ten year old neighbor started screaming. 8220;Ileni, come now! Me: “I can’t, I’m taking a shower! 8220;Look at me! And now the brother joined in…. 8220;You need to come. I was worried there was some sort of chaotic tragedy. Did the baby fall down? My work is spontaneous, intuitive, and always experimental. Extensive travel has enabled me to encounter first hand many of the world’s greatest art treasures. People and places visited are a constant source of inspiration and provide the catalyst for much of my work. While large abstracted pieces allow me to play with shapes and color-I also love the discipline of working with the figure- drawing and sculpting from life. Please check back often as there will be new work posted on a regular basis.

Monday, May 30, 2016. My weekend before finals was spent the way I should have spent all of my weekends in Madrid: wandering the streets and stopping to see whatever I hadn't before. Granted, this was only my third weekend in Madrid so I'll cut myself some slack. Megan and I decided to make a huge to do list of everything we hadn't seen yet during this four day weekend. I'm proud to say we accomplished quite a bit of it. Stopping for a beer in Museo del Jamon: check! Megan's latest hair piece. Megan, Mic...
