It's me, chrystie. Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Welcome to baby land. Baby Claire arrived March 30th. She came quick. Surprise, I was in labor! Oh my stars, the pain! And then within just a few hours she was screaming, and HERE, earth's newest tiny citizen. Pink, flailing, wailing, a little five pound thing. She immediately bewitched us with her baby ways. Suddenly it became clear: all the sweet songs and poems are about her, all the planets spin for her. Our hearts are in a state of beautiful wreckage.

It's me, chrystie. Tuesday, September 24, 2013. Mom and Dad visit. Mom and Dad came to visit last weekend. Dad finally got to see our new house. He made some impromptu home repairs on two faulty doors. Needless to say he can come back anytime! We went into DC for a very short visit Sunday morning, and happened to find a lucky parking spot near the Lincoln Memorial. Dad LOVES Abraham Lincoln! Dad read the entire Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's second inaugural address. We waited for him to do so.

It's me, chrystie. Saturday, June 21, 2014. A fine spring day in Luray. We went to Luray in May one weekend. Mom and Dad came too and we all soaked up the glorious Virginia springtime. We walked into town for lunch and on the way back stopped in the Art Warehouse. It's gigantic and filled with pieces for sale by locals. The further into the warehouse you go, the weirder it gets. Amazing! I found a sculpture with little glass vials I'm pretty sure were filled with urine. I liked it though. We stayed at th...

It's me, chrystie. Wednesday, January 8, 2014. The most wonderful time of the year. Christmas at our house this year! It was a lot of fun and food. Laura with her new best friend. Christmas tree pecan pie. Natalie the Dog found her spot. Christmas morning; most of what's under the tree is hers. This is about right. Kahlil trying on his gift. Trying out Scott's new juicer. There were a lot of juices. Isla and her Uncle Pancake. Laura posing Mowgli while he tries his best to nap. Good dog. Whirlwind trip t...

It's me, chrystie. Saturday, July 12, 2014. Songs have been written about this great state, so many songs. Queue some up in your mind now, and view these overdue pictures from our trip in May with Natalie and Kahlil. We flew to San Francisco a few days before a wedding, rented a car and drove down the coast to Santa Cruz. We pulled off the roadside whenever the notion struck and gazed in wonder at the West Coast. What a sight for sore eyes, the ocean always is. Every scene straight out of a painting.

It's me, chrystie. Friday, October 4, 2013. We went to Harrisonburg to help Natalie and Kahlil unload their Uhaul in the dark of the night last Saturday. The next morning they treated us to breakfast at the Little Grill. Pancake, party of 4. We waited for a table outside the tire shop next door. That velvet painting is weird! These aren't in chronological order. Kahlil found a preying mantis the previous night. We stared at its alien face, and it boxed its preying mantis hands at us in protest.

It's me, chrystie. Monday, March 23, 2015. We transferred 6,000 (! Phone photos to my computer recently. I'm on bedrest during the last few weeks of my pregnancy, so I have time to work on projects like this that have been on the back burner for the last 5-7 years. Other accomplishments from the couch include cleaning out and filing paperwork, unsubscribing from and deleting 22,000 emails, and training to become a professional tv viewer. Here are some pictures from the last month. I also helped Scott get...
it's me, chrystie: New York trip
http://itsmechrystie.blogspot.com/2015/03/new-york-trip.html
It's me, chrystie. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. We took a quick weekend trip to New York at the end of January/start of February. It was wonderful but cold. Brutally cold, nine degrees cold. But we bundled up and walked fast! Like the old days. The room had high ceilings and tall windows, which inspired many photos. One of my favorite NYC landmarks! Right out our window! After breakfast, Scott went to visit his buddies and I spent the afternoon exploring. And full of exquisite detail. Pedro's grandmother i...

It's me, chrystie. Monday, January 19, 2015. We visited the National Arboretum in DC a few days after Christmas. All the trees! The bonsai are a crowd pleaser. Little trees, big details. Even a little bridge, across a little ravine! There are also things on a more grand scale. Winter plants without their green are still lovely. Tree graffiti, both human and nature-made. The branches on this tree were so yellow! And I liked this papery bark:. It was a good day. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

I write about Deep South politics and culture, particularly looking out for how big truths pulse in individual life stories. Privilege, race, women, French and food are all topics I think about. I like to identify the currents submerged beneath a subject, including the way the South’s past inevitably permeates its present. Bonus points for wry humor, even when it’s bittersweet. It often is. My essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Oxford American, storySouth, New Madrid.

My designs are inspired by the spirit of the Himalayas where personal adornment is part of everyday life, and jewelry is a wonderful mix of sacred objects, found pieces, stones, and metals. Each necklace is a unique combination of rare ornaments, semi-precious stones and tribal elements. I hope they suggest vanishing cultures interpreted in a contemporary way and create a sense of discovery and beauty for their owner.
