Janeeats on code and design. Jane Dreams of Programming. How Programming Is Changing The Way I View Everything. Lately, I’ve been dreaming of programming. In my dreams, I’m breaking down problems, explaining them in metaphors. It reminds me of my dreams in Chinese while I studied abroad in Beijing my junion year of college. Living in China changed how I saw everything… for example I will never, ever take Modern Plumbing for granted again. How Do You Eat an Elephant? One Bite at a Time. Posted by Jane Vora.

Heuristic Fencepost: July 2012

Tuesday, July 10, 2012. Ruby, Perl and Eloquence. In an attempt to make my Ruby code a bit more idiomatic I've been spending a bit of time recently with Russ Olsen's excellent Eloquent Ruby. As an example of this tension consider the following example. Perl has a well-deserved reputation for efficiently processing text files with regular expressions. We'll consider an example from another text I've been spending a bit of time with: Hofstadter's seminal Godel, Escher, Bach. The match object will be used a...

And written down as to not forget. Return early from functions. To avoid deep nesting of if-statements, always return a function's value as early as possible. Or for this particular example it may also be fine to shorten things even further:. Feel free to give your closures a name. It shows that you care about them, and will produce better stack traces, heap and cpu profiles. Use closures, but don't nest them. Otherwise your code will become a mess. Catching up on a bunch of stuff by. Read all of it!

4 out of 5 dentists recommend this WordPress.com site. What I have learned so far. Based on the couple recommendations from the development lead and a pile of suggestions from my mentor, this is what I’ve accomplished so far:. Finished Learn to Program by Chris Pine. And got a “Hello World” local page up and running. Only to find that its broken in a lot of spots (its possible that its just my browser, but I don’t have time to figure that out). I went through Man With Code’s. By Zed A. Shaw. The book rea...

4 out of 5 dentists recommend this WordPress.com site. Month: September, 2012. September 26, 2012. If its not hard, you’re not learning. Still mostly reading Well Grounded Rubyist. I also started tinkering around with Rails a little, though I’m definitely in over my head on that. After I finish up with the Team Treehouse stuff (which is really great by the way) I’ll hit up Project Euler. Varney keeps telling me to do it. So I will just to shut him up. September 22, 2012. Perhaps a documentary or fun book?
