Cooperation with non-European countries:. EMBO and EMBC aim to strengthen links between scientists in selected non-European partner countries and Europe. European scientists and scientists in the partner countries will collaborate via EMBO's core programmes. There are two levels of cooperation between non-European partner countries and EMBO/EMBC: Co-operation agreements and Associate Membership. Scientists in co-operating partner countries gain access to a subset of the EMBO programmes and activities.

The origins of the molecular biology discipline stem from the early 1960's when scientists first began to study biological entities at a molecular level. The EMBC was founded by EMBO as a way of funding and structuring the field in Europe. The newly established Volkswagen Foundation generously supported the early EMBO networking activities.
