Mostly sermons and meditations. Occasional theological reflections. Sunday, May 26, 2013. Proverbs 8.1-4,22-31. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Please, be seated. Remember with me, will you? If you are seated here in the nave of Marsh Chapel you may want to find a comfortable posture, if such is possible in wooden pews, and fold your hands in your lap and let your eyelids drift downward just a bit. A bride and a groom were making final preparations for their nuptials.

Mostly sermons and meditations. Occasional theological reflections. Sunday, May 30, 2010. What Shall We Say? Well, this is just fantastic. The dean decides to take Memorial Day weekend off and leaves me stuck attempting to explain the doctrine of the Trinity. It’s only the most complicated and contested doctrine in the history of Christian thought. Nothing we can’t get sorted out in the next twenty minutes. Holy God; Holy and mighty; Holy and eternal. What exactly are we supposed to do here? But God does...

He could have been talking about the disciples. How often, in the gospel narratives, are the disciples depicted as numbskulls who can’t seem to get anything right? Jesus could also have been talking about me. I would be the first to confess that I rarely ever have any clue as to what I am doing. On my best days, I’m halfway decent at faking it. This ...

Mostly sermons and meditations. Occasional theological reflections. Sunday, July 03, 2011. Freely, Humbly, Honestly. Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30. It is good to begin in a spirit of gratitude, and so once again it is incumbent upon me to begin this sermon with a word of gratitude to Dean Hill for his gracious offering of a preaching series in the late spring and summer of 2011. Some of you may remember when we began, back in May, on Mother’s Day, and then a few weeks later continued on Memorial Day. We can s...

We join head and heart with body and voice as we offer our prayers to God. I will conclude each petition, “God, in your mercy.” Please respond, “Hear our prayer.”. That we as a chapel and University community may come more and more each day to believe in one another. God, in your mercy. That all who seek may find a spiritual home and a spiritual family. God, in your mercy.

Mostly sermons and meditations. Occasional theological reflections. Sunday, August 05, 2012. The world is ending! It’s very exciting. All manner of natural and human-made destruction. At least, this is what most readily comes to mind when the language of apocalypse is invoked in our late modern context. It is a bit distant from the Greek definition of something hidden being made manifest or revealed, which is far tamer. Biblical apocalyptic vision arose in continuity with the prophetic tradition of Israel.

Mostly sermons and meditations. Occasional theological reflections. Sunday, July 07, 2013. Luke 10:1-11, 16-20. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Don’t you just love it when the Fourth of July, Independence Day, falls on a Thursday? When it falls on a Wednesday we are expected to go back to work on Thursday and Friday, but on a Thursday most employers just give up and give everyone Friday off as well. A four-day weekend for the Fourth! What could be more appropriate!
