We established Entwood Wildlife Sanctuary, at Sandleton SA. In 1979, initially starting with 100 acres. Since then Entwood has grown to 1800 acres. Ownership has passed to our children Lenny and Lissy Donald, who intend to maintain the property as a Wildlife Sanctuary. For now management remains with us. In 1992, Entwood was officially declared a Sanctuary; and listed as such in the government gazette adding weight to the protection of its wildlife. Visits can be made by appointment only.

Wayne and Cheryl have recently retired and now have time to enjoy Entwood. The beauty of the Sanctuary is not immediately obvious, to the novice, but never ceases to surprise and captivate. It is a pleasure to live here despite being in a semi arid region. After completing a science degree, we plan to conduct more species counts at Entwood. We have noticed, using hides built on trailers,. That wildlife become accustomed to unfamiliar objects. And quite quickly return to normal behaviour.

Is situated in a semi-arid region of the Murraylands known as the Sandleton district. It lies approximately 24 kilometres west of Blanchetown on the Murray River. Primary flora is comprised of Mallee eucalypt forest and open areas of saltbush and acacias. Average rainfall is 250mm (10 inches) per year. Clearly the above shows the extent of the protection we provide, but apart from that:.

All life forms are interdependent: Prey is as dependent on predators for population control as predators are dependent on prey for food supply. Stability of ecosystems is dependent on their diversity (complexity): An ecosystem that contains 100 species is more stable than an ecosystem that contains only three species. For example, complex tropical rain forests are more stable than fragile arctic tundra.

These lists link to Ellura Sanctuary. Our smallest species count of any class are of Mammals (Mammalia). With 6 native species being observed at Entwood. The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons). Loss of pasture to introduced grazing stock. Feral plants (weeds) replacing their natural food source. Competition with feral animals. Deliberate culling of their population. Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus). Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus). Yellow-footed Antechinus (Antechinus flavipes).
