When we first visited the Free State and North Western Province branches of Epilepsy SA, we were profoundly touched by what we witnessed there. The Residential Care Centre provides care for 80 adults, of whom many have multiple disabilities. These disabilities range from epilepsy to intellectual disability, down-syndrome, hydrocephalus, speech impediments, physical disabilities and psychiatric disabilities such as schizophrenia. Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Epilepsy is currently defined as a tendency to have recurrent seizures. Is caused by a sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the brain, causing a temporary disruption in the normal message passing between brain cells. This disruption results in the brain’s messages becoming halted or mixed up. Anything that disrupts the normal function of the brain can cause seizures and epilepsy.
