A brief history of Ewhurst. Old houses in Ewhurst. Ewhurst is a village about 35 miles south west of London on the Surrey Sussex border. Close by is the larger village of Cranleigh and the nearest towns of Guildford, Dorking and Horsham, are each about 10 miles away. There are two other villages called Ewhurst one in East Sussex near Bodiam (church - St James) and one near Basingstoke in Hampshire (church - St Mary the Virgin). The First Anniversary of the Outbreak of the War. A service was held in the parish church to mark the anniversary of outbreak of the war. The Surrey Advertiser reported ‘Wednesday evening being the first anniversary of the war a special united service was held in the parish church. The vicar [sic] (the Rev. A.J. The first non-conformist church in Ewhurst was a chapel opened by the Surrey Mission in 1821, based in the Shere Road. It grew to about 100 to 150 members. The church outgrew the original building and they moved to a new site the foundations of which were laid in 1908 on the present site by the Congregational Union. Ewhurst is a picturesque small village situated at the foot of the Surrey Hills, approximately 3 miles from Cranleigh and 12 miles from Guildford. Currently 3 shows are held each year: Spring; Summer and Autumn.
