Avoiding Trivial Stakes - John's RPG Journal

Avoiding Trivial Stakes - Johns RPG Journal. December 9th, 2005. 12:06 pm - Avoiding Trivial Stakes. So there's been some more talk on stakes and resolution mechanics on Actual Play. Nathan Paoletta had an interesting post, Never Going Back. It throws into clear relief one of the greatest things about recent, indie, conflict-resolution based RPGs. When clear intent and stakes are determined, it excises boring play. More specifically, should I push for change in the HârnMaster game, and if so how? Some ge...

March 8th, 2013. 09:59 am - Randomness in RPGs. Via a Story Games thread. I happened across a talk from Gen Con 2012 with James Ernest and Jason Morningstar. Ernest's notes. Are online, as is a mp3. Of the seminar. Part of Ernest's point is here:. Randomness in game design can be broken down into three general categories relating to game design: Cosmetic, biased, and fair randomness. Cosmetic randomness has no bearing on the strategy or outcome of the game. An example. Cosmetic: We don’t talk a lot about...

Unrealities of Mine: September 2005
http://unrealitiesofmine.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
Roleplaying, larp and boardgames. Wednesday, September 14, 2005. Larps of the Autumn. Yesterday evening I got two larp invitations. NCID. The creator of Mellanrummet. Is arranging Fröken Ingeborg är försenad. Ms Ingeborg is late) and Fabel. Have two arrangements, a rerun of Efter Mörkret. After the Darkness) and an independent second part called Monster. The first one had only half of the positions open after less than 24 hours. Popular indeed! We decided to skip Monster. Posted by Jonas Barkå at 23:42.

Cheaper by the couple | Unroll My Dice
https://radaghast.wordpress.com/2009/01/12/cheaper-by-the-couple
Storehouse for RPG-related ideas. Cheaper by the couple. One of the games I’m actively designing now has a lot to do with duality, so I might use this idea there. But then again, maybe not, so I’m gonna write it out here anyway. This entry was posted on Monday, January 12th, 2009 at 10:48:12 and is filed under character creation. Abilities as exceptions | Unroll My Dice
https://radaghast.wordpress.com/2008/12/22/abilities-as-exceptions
Storehouse for RPG-related ideas. In D&D3.x there was an unbreakable rule that ‘specific beats generic’ (the only discussions were about what is more specific than the other, but I’m gonna leave it at that). If you generalise that rule, you end up with a mighty fine game rule. Character abilities are exceptions from the rules. I’m planning to use this meta-rule for both designing and explaining one of the games I’m working on right now (yes, that fantasy heartbreaker. Seems cool so far. From your own site.

Turning undead | Unroll My Dice

Storehouse for RPG-related ideas. Also, Noisms had the coolest idea. In his Monsters and Manuals blog about sumo priests doing the stomp for turning instead of just thrusting you hand forward with a holy symbol clenched in the fingers. I should totally go back to Salveblues (the fantasy setting I use for my games) and re-think some of the priests that do have turning powers.
