Massey Harris sleigh table. There were two barns on what is now our yard in Thornton. Off size lumber can be either sizes we’re accustomed to hearing but not seeing…….a 2″ x 4″ that actually measures 2″ x 4″, or it can be hand hewn or milled sizes that you don’t normally find; 15′ 3″ x 5″s for example or 1″ boards 30″ wide or more! Hand hewn, over 2″ thick…more like 3 – 31/2! We have a several hundred square feet of ‘threshing’ board left….up to 3″ thick, 8-20″ wide and in various lengths from 5′-20′. Board foot (volume) length x width x thickness divided by 144.

Massey Harris sleigh table. I think the Chachka part of all this is the most interesting, it gives one a real sense of both the farmers ingenuity and hard work! Massey Harris sleigh table. Beams, posts and sleepers. I have quite a few cedar sleepers, ranging from 12′ – 32′ and over 24″ in diameter. Beams, posts and sleepers are the ‘mainframe’ of these more than century old beauties. It’s from this perspective you get the magnitude of these behemoths. These shots are from 3 different barns that we’ve recently reclaimed beams, posts and sleepers from. 25- 50′ sleepers! And then right angle. Most are hand hewn and in lengths from 6-45′. Onto off sized lumber.
